Dyson Purifier Humidify+Cool PH03 Review: Three Machines In One Tower

The verdict

The PH03 is Dyson's purifying humidifier for people who want one appliance instead of three: a sealed HEPA H13 and activated carbon stack, a one gallon tank that runs up to 36 hours with its water passed under UV light, and a bladeless fan with ten speeds and 90 degrees of oscillation. It is the machine to buy if dry indoor air is your actual problem, because the humidification is what nothing else in this category does as cleanly. The catch is a polarised owner base: the people it works for love it, and a sizeable group report units failing inside the first few months. At this price tier that risk is the whole decision.

Best for
  • Dry-air homes
  • Allergy sufferers
  • Nurseries and bedrooms
  • Small spaces with no room for three appliances

Pros

  • Whole machine sealed to HEPA H13, not just the filter
  • One gallon tank runs up to 36 hours, with the water passed under UV light
  • Auto purify and Auto humidify modes hold a target instead of running flat out
  • Ten airflow speeds, 90 degrees of oscillation and a backward airflow mode for winter
  • LCD screen graphs PM2.5, PM10, VOCs, nitrogen dioxide, temperature and humidity
  • Alexa and Google Home voice control, plus a community Home Assistant integration
  • Two year warranty

Cons

  • Recurring reports of units failing within the first few months, most often the humidifier side
  • Owners describe slow support and long waits for replacement parts
  • No Matter support, so no Apple Home and no SmartThings
  • Dyson publishes no CADR or coverage figure, so it cannot be compared on paper
  • No formaldehyde sensing, which is what the PH04 adds
  • The citric acid deep clean cycle is mandatory maintenance
  • Premium pricing for filtration you can match for much less

Who is the Dyson Purifier Humidify+Cool PH03 for?

This is a three-in-one machine, and the humidifier is the part that justifies it. A one gallon tank gives up to 36 hours of running between refills, an Auto humidify mode holds a target humidity instead of blasting the room, and Dyson Ultraviolet Cleanse passes every drop of water under a 275nm UV light before it is evaporated, which is the answer to the mould and bacteria problem that dogs cheap ultrasonic humidifiers. Around that sits a genuine purifier: the whole machine, not just the cartridge, is sealed to HEPA H13, with activated carbon for odours and gases. Add ten airflow speeds, selectable oscillation of 0, 45 or 90 degrees and a backward airflow mode that purifies without blowing cold air at you, and it covers the winter dryness and the summer heat with one footprint. If your air is fine and you only want particle filtration, a plain purifier does that for a fraction of the money.

What buyers love

The owners who get a good unit are emphatic about it. The humidification is the thing they notice first, described as an immediate difference to skin and to congestion overnight, and several point at a nursery or a bedroom as the room where it earned its keep. Setup is the other recurring compliment: connecting the machine to the MyDyson app and driving it from a phone is reported as painless, which matters on a machine whose LCD menus hold a lot of settings. The quiet end of the range is well liked too, with Night mode capping airflow at speeds 1 to 4 and dimming the screen, which is why the bedroom keeps coming up.

What to know before you buy

Reliability is the loudest theme in the reviews and it is not a stray complaint. Owners describe machines going completely unresponsive after two months, faults appearing within ten days, tanks arriving damaged, and a water pump and humidifier that stop working while the fan keeps running. A shrill noise developing after a few months comes up more than once. Several of the same people report slow going with support and long waits for parts, which is what turns a fault into months without the machine. Buy it new and keep the receipt: one of the worst experiences here came from an open-box unit sold as very good condition. There are practical limits too. Dyson does not publish a CADR figure for this machine, so you cannot compare its cleaning rate against a Levoit or a Winix on paper. It also sits outside Dyson's Matter rollout, which reached the newer De-NOx generation, so there is no Apple Home or SmartThings route to it; voice control is Alexa and Google Home, and local control means the community Home Assistant integration. And the deep clean cycle with citric acid is a real chore you have to run, not an optional extra.

Is the Dyson Purifier Humidify+Cool PH03 worth it?

It is priced at the top of the category and it does not win on filtration numbers, because Dyson does not publish any. What you are paying for is the combination: sealed H13 filtration, hygienic humidification and a fan that circulates air across a whole room, in one tower with a proper LCD readout of PM2.5, PM10, VOCs, nitrogen dioxide, temperature and humidity. Judged as three appliances it is defensible; judged as a purifier alone it is expensive. The honest advice is that the discount matters here. At full price the failure reports are hard to accept, and at a deep discount the same machine becomes a reasonable gamble backed by a two year warranty. If formaldehyde is your specific worry, the PH04 adds a sensor and a catalytic filter this model does not have.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Dyson PH03 work with Alexa and Google Home?

Yes. Dyson lists Amazon Alexa, Apple Siri and Google Home as the voice services for this machine, all through the MyDyson app. Apple Siri here means app shortcuts, not the Apple Home app.

Can the Dyson PH03 be added to Apple Home, SmartThings or a Matter home?

No. Dyson's Matter firmware went to the newer De-NOx generation and the Find+Follow PC3, not to this model, and there is no native Apple Home or SmartThings profile. Home Assistant is the exception: a community integration covers the Purifier Humidify+Cool line.

What is the difference between the Dyson PH03 and the PH04?

The PH04 adds formaldehyde detection and a catalytic filter that breaks formaldehyde down. Everything else, the sealed HEPA H13 stack, the humidifier and the fan, is the same idea. The PH03 has no formaldehyde sensor.

How is the water kept clean in the Dyson PH03?

Dyson Ultraviolet Cleanse exposes every drop of water to a 275nm UV light before it is evaporated, which Dyson tests at destroying 99.9 percent of bacteria in the tank. You still have to run a deep clean cycle with citric acid when the machine asks for one.

How long does the Dyson PH03 run before it needs refilling?

Up to 36 hours of humidification from its one gallon tank, according to Dyson. Auto humidify mode pauses the machine once the target room humidity is reached, which stretches that further.

Is the Dyson PH03 quiet enough for a bedroom?

At its highest speed it has been independently measured at 54.3 dB, which is not quiet, but Night mode limits it to airflow speeds 1 to 4 and dims the LCD screen. Owners who put it in bedrooms and nurseries single that mode out.
