A HEPA filter is the mechanical layer that captures fine particles such as dust, pollen, smoke, mould spores and pet dander. True HEPA filters are rated to trap 99.97% of particles at 0.3 microns, the size that is hardest to capture.

Grades follow the European EN 1822 scale: H11 captures 95%, H12 captures 99.5% and H13 captures 99.95% of particles down to 0.1 microns. H13 is the grade used by sealed medical-style purifiers.

Some manufacturers use electrostatic or "HEPA-type" media instead, which trades a little efficiency for lower airflow resistance and quieter operation.

Activated carbon adsorbs gases and odours that a HEPA filter passes straight through: cooking smells, smoke, pet odour, paint fumes and volatile organic compounds released by furniture and cleaning products.

The amount of carbon matters more than its presence. A thin carbon-coated sheet fades within weeks, while purifiers using carbon pellets measured in kilograms keep working for months.

Clean Air Delivery Rate is the volume of filtered air the purifier produces at its highest fan speed, measured in cubic feet per minute (CFM). It is the single most useful number when comparing purifiers because it combines airflow and filtration efficiency.

AHAM publishes three separate CADR figures, for smoke, dust and pollen; the smoke rating is the strictest and the one worth comparing.

A rough rule of thumb is that the CADR should be at least two thirds of the room area in square feet to deliver a meaningful number of air changes per hour.

The floor area the manufacturer says the purifier can handle, in square feet.

Read this number carefully: the same product is often quoted as covering a large room at one air change per hour and a much smaller one at the four to five air changes per hour that allergy sufferers actually need. The figures verified by AHAM are the conservative ones.

More speeds give finer control over the noise and airflow trade-off, which matters most in bedrooms and home offices.

Power drawn at the highest fan speed, in watts. Purifiers are usually left running all day, so a difference of 30 W between two models is a visible difference on the electricity bill over a year.

Energy Star certified models are tested for efficiency at their standby and running speeds, not only at maximum.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a large and diverse group of compounds that volatilize into the air at room temperature. Inside your home, volatile organic compounds are harmful, carcinogenic air pollutants that evaporate at normal indoor atmospheric conditions.

The majority of indoor VOCs come from everyday household staples, including sprays and aerosols such as air fresheners, cleaners and pesticides. Many products, such as glue, new furniture and carpets, construction materials and electronic devices produce VOCs through off-gassing as well. Your home will release these trapped VOCs and could harm you and your family.

TVOC (Total Volatile Organic Compounds) refers to the aggregate concentration of all VOCs in the air. Instead of measuring each individual VOC, TVOC gives you a general measure of the total level of volatile organic compounds present in a specific area.

When it reaches high levels indoors, carbon dioxide (CO2) can cause poor sleep and trouble concentrating.

Formaldehyde (HCHO) is a colourless gas released by pressed-wood furniture, laminate flooring, adhesives and new textiles through off-gassing. It irritates eyes and airways and is classified as a human carcinogen.

Only a handful of purifiers carry a dedicated solid-state formaldehyde sensor; most report formaldehyde indirectly as part of a general VOC reading, which cannot tell you which gas it is detecting.

Temperature is not just a matter of comfort, it can negatively affect sleep quality, mood, and alertness.

High humidity promotes mold growth and aggravates asthma symptoms, while too-dry air can lead to skin and throat irritation.
