Winix 5510 Review: True HEPA and PlasmaWave for Big Rooms, Nearly Silent on Low

AHAM Verifide for 392 sq ft, a 23.5 dB low speed, and app control that reaches Alexa, Google Home and Home Assistant.

The verdict

The 5510 is the connected version of the Winix formula that made this line one of the most reviewed in the category, and it keeps the parts that earned that: a washable fine mesh pre-filter, an AOC carbon layer for odors and a True HEPA filter, AHAM Verifide for 392 sq ft with a 253 CFM smoke CADR. What is new is the Winix Smart app, which adds schedules, air quality history and filter life at a glance, plus Alexa and Google Home voice control. Owners describe it consistently as very quiet at low speed and genuinely effective on wildfire smoke, cooking smells and pet odors. The trade-offs are a fiddly Alexa account-linking step, a Turbo speed that is loud enough to notice, and a 120 V unit meant for North America.

Best for
  • Large rooms
  • Pet owners
  • Allergy sufferers
  • Wildfire smoke
  • Quiet bedrooms

Pros

  • True HEPA filter rated to capture 99.99% of particles down to 0.01 microns
  • AOC activated carbon filter that handles cooking, pet and smoke odors
  • Washable fine mesh pre-filter, so the paid filters last longer
  • AHAM Verifide for 392 sq ft, with a 253 CFM smoke CADR
  • 23.5 dB on the lowest speed, near silent in a bedroom
  • Automatic sleep mode triggered by a light sensor, not a timer
  • Auto mode drives the fan from the built-in air quality sensor
  • Winix Smart app adds schedules, air quality history and filter life
  • Works with Alexa, Google Home and Home Assistant
  • Backed by a 2 year warranty

Cons

  • Alexa linking needs a Winix account and a QR code scan, and voice control is limited
  • Turbo speed is noticeably loud
  • Auto mode can read as over-sensitive during the first week
  • No screen on the unit, readings live in the LED and the app
  • No temperature, humidity, CO2 or formaldehyde readings
  • 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only
  • No Apple Home, SmartThings or Matter support
  • Includes a PlasmaWave ionizer stage and is not an ozone-free design
  • 120 V unit built for North America

Who is the Winix 5510 for?

This is a large-room purifier, AHAM Verifide at 392 sq ft and rated to clean up to 1,882 sq ft in an hour, so it suits a living room, an open kitchen or a big bedroom rather than a desk or a nursery. The four-stage stack is aimed squarely at households with a specific smell or particle problem: a washable pre-filter for hair and lint, an AOC carbon filter for cooking, pet and smoke odors, and a True HEPA filter behind them. Owners reach for it during wildfire season, in homes with dogs and cats, and in rooms with no ventilation, and several run more than one unit to cover an open-concept floor, which is the right instinct given the AHAM figure.

What buyers love

Two things come up again and again. The first is how quiet it is: the low speed is rated 23.5 dB, and owners in bedrooms describe it as inaudible in sleep mode, with more than one using it as a white noise machine at higher speeds. The second is the automatic sleep mode, which is driven by a light sensor rather than a schedule: when the room goes dark the LEDs dim and the fan drops below its lowest normal speed on its own, then it returns to Auto when the light comes back. Setup and the app also get consistent praise, with owners pairing the unit in minutes and singling out being able to check remaining filter life and set schedules from the phone. On results, the recurring report is that odors go away and the air quality indicator settles from red or amber down to blue over the first day or two.

What to know before you buy

The voice integrations exist but are not seamless: linking the Winix Smart skill to Alexa involves creating a Winix account and scanning a QR code, and owners report that the purifier is not treated like a native Alexa air purifier, so the app remains the most reliable control. Turbo moves a lot of air and is loud enough that most owners leave the unit on Auto or a low speed. The Auto mode itself can read as very sensitive in the first days, and Winix support advises running on a fixed speed for the first week before trusting it. The unit itself has no screen: readings live in the three color LED and in the app, and there are no temperature, humidity, CO2 or formaldehyde figures. Wi-Fi is 2.4 GHz only, there is no Apple Home, SmartThings or Matter support, and the PlasmaWave ionizer stage, while it can be switched off from its own button, is not an ozone-free design. Finally, this is a 120 V North American unit, which has caught out buyers importing it to 220 V to 240 V countries.

Is the Winix 5510 worth it?

For a large room, this is one of the strongest value propositions in the category: AHAM Verifide coverage, a real four-stage filter stack, a genuinely quiet low speed and app control, all well under what the premium tower brands charge. Budget for an annual filter change, since the True HEPA and carbon filters are rated for about 12 months and only the pre-filter is washable. The things you give up against pricier machines are a display on the unit, a broader sensor suite and native smart-home certification, none of which change how much air it actually cleans. If you want the same hardware without the fuss, the app and voice control are optional; used purely as a dumb purifier on Auto it still does the job.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Winix 5510 work with Alexa and Google Home?

Yes. Winix lists the smart features as Wi-Fi, Alexa and Google Home, and control runs through the Winix Smart app account. Linking Alexa means adding the Winix Smart skill and authorising it against your Winix account, which owners describe as a clunky one-time step, and voice commands are more limited than on natively certified purifiers.

Does the Winix 5510 work with Home Assistant?

Yes. There is no core integration, but the community Winix integration installed through HACS signs in with the same Winix Smart account and lists the 5510 among the models reported to work. Note that Winix does not allow simultaneous logins, so the Home Assistant session and the phone app can knock each other out.

What is PlasmaWave and should I leave it on?

PlasmaWave is Winix's ionization stage, and it has its own button so it can be switched off at any time. The mechanical filtration works fully without it. Winix publishes an 8 hour ozone figure of 0.22 ppbv for the unit, which is why it is CARB compliant rather than ozone free, and plenty of owners simply leave the stage off.

How often do the filters need replacing?

The True HEPA and AOC carbon filters are rated for roughly 12 months and are sold together as the Filter Q set. The fine mesh pre-filter in front of them is permanent and washable, and Winix suggests cleaning it every 3 months, which is what extends the life of the two paid filters. A filter replacement indicator on the unit tells you when the set is due.

Is the Winix 5510 quiet enough for a bedroom?

On its lowest speed it is rated 23.5 dB, and sleep mode drops the fan below that while dimming the indicator LEDs, so most owners find it inaudible overnight. The light sensor puts it into sleep mode by itself when the room goes dark. Turbo is a different story and is loud enough that it is not a setting to sleep through.

Can I use the Winix 5510 outside North America?

It is built for AC 120 V at 60 Hz, so it is a North American unit. Buyers who have imported it to countries running 220 V to 240 V have destroyed the unit by plugging it straight in, and the warranty does not follow it abroad. If you are outside North America, look for a regional Winix model instead.
