QNAP (Quality Network Appliance Provider) is a Taiwanese company that designs network attached storage, switches, routers and smart video hardware, and builds it in its own ISO certified factory. Its NAS ship with the QTS operating system and can be switched to QuTS hero, which replaces EXT4 with ZFS and adds WORM storage against data tampering. The App Center distributes the add-ons that turn a QNAP NAS into a Plex server, a QVR surveillance recorder or a Docker and virtual machine host.

Synology is a Taiwanese company founded in 2000 that specializes in network attached storage, backup appliances and surveillance recorders. Its DiskStation Manager (DSM) operating system is the most established in the category, covering Btrfs snapshots, cloud sync, and a Surveillance Station package that turns a NAS into a local network video recorder for IP cameras. Models with Intel or AMD processors run Container Manager, which is the usual way people self-host Home Assistant and similar services at home.
