Matter is a unified, open-source connectivity protocol designed to standardize and simplify communication between smart home devices from different manufacturers. Developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (formerly the Zigbee Alliance), Matter aims to improve interoperability, security, and reliability across various smart home ecosystems.

Cameras were left out of the standard until Matter 1.5, published in November 2025, which added camera device types with live video and audio streaming over WebRTC, two-way talk, motion detection, event history and pan-tilt-zoom control. Before that release a camera could only reach a Matter ecosystem through its hub side, bridging the accessories paired to it, never its own video feed.

Because the camera device types are this recent, support arrives model by model and often through a firmware update, so a camera that works with Apple Home, Alexa or Google Home today is not necessarily a Matter device.
