Zigbee Smart Home Devices

Zigbee is the low-power mesh standard of the Connectivity Standards Alliance: battery sensors and mains-powered plugs and bulbs form a self-healing network around a Zigbee coordinator, a hub, a dongle or an Echo with Zigbee built in. Here is how it works, what you need to start and the products in our catalog that use it.

Pros and cons

Is Zigbee right for you?

Pros

  • Very low power: battery sensors last a long time
  • Self-healing mesh: plugs and bulbs extend the range
  • A wide choice of sensors, plugs, switches and bulbs
  • Keeps dozens of devices off your Wi-Fi
  • Works with Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant

Cons

  • Needs a coordinator: a hub, a dongle or an Echo with Zigbee
  • Not IP-based, so Matter only reaches it through a bridge
  • No Zigbee radio in Google Home or Apple Home
  • Shares the 2.4 GHz band with Wi-Fi
Best forLarge networks of battery sensors, plugs and bulbs

Homes with many sensors and lights that should last on their batteries and keep working as one network, run from a hub, an Echo or Home Assistant.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a Zigbee device?

A smart home device, often a battery sensor, a plug, a switch or a bulb, that talks over Zigbee, the low-power mesh standard of the Connectivity Standards Alliance, instead of Wi-Fi.

Do I need a hub for Zigbee?

Yes: a Zigbee network needs one coordinator. It can be a hub (such as a Hue Bridge or a SmartThings hub), an Echo with Zigbee built in, or a USB dongle for Home Assistant.

Does Zigbee work with Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home?

With Alexa, through Echo models that have a Zigbee hub inside. Google Home and Apple Home have no Zigbee radio, so Zigbee devices reach them through their maker's hub or a Matter bridge.

Does Zigbee work with Matter?

Only through a bridge: Matter is IP-based and Zigbee is not, so a hub that bridges Zigbee devices into Matter is needed.

What is the range of Zigbee?

The Connectivity Standards Alliance gives 10 to 100 meters per hop, depending on power and surroundings, and every mains-powered device extends the mesh further.

Zigbee or Thread?

Both use the same low-power 2.4 GHz radio. Zigbee has more devices today; Thread speaks IP and is a native Matter network, supported by every major ecosystem.
