SMLIGHT SLZB-06 MG26 Review: The Newest Silicon Labs Radio in a PoE Zigbee Gateway

EFR32MG26 with an amplified external antenna, connecting over Ethernet, PoE, USB or Wi-Fi, and proxying Bluetooth to Home Assistant.

The verdict

The SLZB-06 MG26 is SMLIGHT's LAN-connected Zigbee gateway built around the EFR32MG26, the newest Silicon Labs chip in the family, with more headroom for large device counts than earlier radios. It connects over Ethernet with PoE, USB or Wi-Fi, so the coordinator can be mounted where the mesh needs it rather than at the server, and it adds a +20 dB amplifier with a +5 dBi external antenna. It works as a Zigbee coordinator and router, a Thread border router and a Bluetooth proxy for Home Assistant. There is no dual network mode and no USB-over-Ethernet passthrough.

Best for
  • Large Zigbee meshes
  • Home Assistant and Zigbee2MQTT setups
  • PoE installations
  • Servers in poor radio locations

Pros

  • Newest Silicon Labs EFR32MG26 radio in the range
  • Ethernet with PoE, plus USB and Wi-Fi options
  • +20 dB amplifier with a +5 dBi external antenna
  • Works as both Zigbee coordinator and router
  • Thread border router capability
  • Bluetooth proxy for relaying BLE sensors to Home Assistant
  • Home Assistant and Zigbee2MQTT support

Cons

  • No dual network mode, so Zigbee and Thread cannot run simultaneously
  • No USB-over-Ethernet passthrough
  • No Z-Wave support and no Matter bridging
  • 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only
  • Newest model, so less proven than the older CC2652 units
  • One year warranty

Who is the SLZB-06 MG26 for?

It suits a Zigbee network that has grown past what a USB stick handles comfortably, or a house where the server sits in a bad radio position. Ethernet with PoE means one cable delivers power and network, so the gateway can go on a hallway wall or a central shelf while Home Assistant stays in the cupboard. Both Home Assistant and Zigbee2MQTT are supported, and USB or Wi-Fi connection remain available if the layout changes.

What it offers

The EFR32MG26 is the current top of Silicon Labs' Zigbee line, so this is the model to pick if you want the newest silicon and the largest device capacity. It pairs with a +20 dB amplifier and a detachable +5 dBi external antenna, the combination that keeps far-flung battery sensors on the mesh. It works as coordinator and as a Zigbee router, serves as a Thread border router for Matter accessories, and acts as a Bluetooth proxy, relaying BLE sensor signals back to Home Assistant over the network from wherever it is mounted.

What to know before you buy

Zigbee and Thread cannot run at the same time: there is no dual network mode, so the gateway fills one role at a time. USB-over-Ethernet passthrough is not supported on this model, so it cannot share other USB dongles across the network. There is no Z-Wave support and no Matter bridging of existing Zigbee devices. Wi-Fi is 2.4 GHz only. It is also the newest model in the range, which in practice means firmware and integration guides are less battle-tested than for the older CC2652-based units, something to weigh if you prefer proven over new. Warranty is one year.

Is the SLZB-06 MG26 worth it?

It is priced at the top of SMLIGHT's LAN coordinator range, and what you get for that is the newest radio plus the same placement freedom and BLE proxying as its siblings. If you are starting a large mesh from scratch, buying the newest chip is a reasonable hedge. If your network is modest, the older MG24 or CC2652 versions do the same job for less, and with a longer track record behind them.

Frequently asked questions

How is the MG26 different from the MG24 version?

The radio. This model uses Silicon Labs' newer EFR32MG26 chip, which has more headroom for large device counts. The connectivity, amplifier, antenna and feature set are otherwise the same.

Can it be powered over Ethernet?

Yes. PoE is supported, so one cable carries both power and network, and USB and Wi-Fi are available as alternatives.

Does it work as a Thread border router?

Yes, though not at the same time as Zigbee, since there is no dual network mode.

Does it extend Bluetooth coverage?

Yes. It acts as a Bluetooth proxy, relaying BLE sensor signals to Home Assistant over the network.

Does it support Z-Wave?

No. It is a Zigbee and Thread device with no Z-Wave radio.
