Level Bolt (Matter) Review: The Invisible Smart Deadbolt That Keeps Your Keys
The Level Bolt (Matter) is the smart lock for a door you do not want to change. It replaces only the bolt inside the door, so the outside keeps the lock, finish and keys you already have, while adding app control, activity history and Matter-over-Thread for Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings. It is not a keypad lock and it does not carry Apple home keys or NFC fobs: those are the Level Lock+ and Lock Pro. Remote control also needs a Matter-over-Thread hub acting as a Thread border router, or the Level Connect bridge, sold separately. Buy it for the invisible retrofit and the standards support, not for hardware on the door.
- Rentals and doors that must keep their existing hardware
- Apple Home, Google Home and Alexa homes built on Matter
- Anyone who wants a smart lock without a visible keypad
- Doors with a standard American deadbolt
Pros
- Hides inside the door, so the exterior lock, finish and keys stay as they are
- Matter-over-Thread built in and CSA certified, reaching Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant
- Level Home app over Bluetooth for local control and activity history
- Auto Lock when you leave and Auto Unlock when you return, set in the app
- Physical key keeps working when the battery is empty
- Tested to ANSI Grade 1/A and BHMA A standards, IPX4 rated and rated for up to a year on one CR2 cell
Cons
- No keypad included: typed codes need the Level Keypad, sold separately
- No Apple home keys and no NFC fobs, which the Lock+ and Lock Pro carry
- No fingerprint reader
- Remote access needs a Matter-over-Thread hub or the Level Connect bridge, sold separately
- No door-position sensor, so automatic locking is timer-based
- One finish only, and the deadbolt and strike plate must be accurately aligned
Who is the Level Bolt (Matter) for?
This is a lock for someone who likes the door as it is. The motor, radio and battery live inside the door, replacing the existing deadbolt, so the exterior trim, the cylinder and the keys stay exactly the same. That makes it a natural fit for a rental, a period door or any entry where a keypad slab would look out of place. It also suits a household standardising on Matter: the lock speaks Matter-over-Thread, is certified by the Connectivity Standards Alliance, and reaches Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant through a compatible hub. What it is not is a keypad-first lock for a home that wants a code on the door out of the box, or a lock for someone who wants Apple home keys or tap-to-unlock with a fob.
What the Level Bolt (Matter) offers
Everyday entry is layered. The Level Home app locks and unlocks over Bluetooth Low Energy when you are in range, the physical key still turns the cylinder, and the Level Keypad, sold separately, adds typed codes for guests. Through Matter, the same lock becomes reachable from the smart home platform you already use, so voice commands, routines and remote lock or unlock work once a Matter-over-Thread hub is in place. The app keeps an activity history of who locked or unlocked and by which method, warns before the CR2 cell runs out, and can lock the door automatically when you leave and unlock it when you return. The hardware is built for the long run: a six-stage stainless steel gearbox, testing to ANSI Grade 1/A and BHMA A standards, IPX4 water resistance, an operating range of -20 to 60 C and a battery rated for up to a year.
What to know before you buy
The Bolt is deliberately minimal, and the omissions are the point. There is no keypad in the box, no fingerprint reader, no NFC fob and no Apple home keys: those features belong to the Level Lock+ and Lock Pro, and the Bolt keeps its cost and its invisible look by leaving them out. There is no Wi-Fi radio either, so anything beyond Bluetooth range travels over Thread and needs a Matter-over-Thread hub controller acting as a Thread border router, or the Level Connect Wi-Fi bridge, both separate purchases. There is also no door-position sensor, so automatic locking runs on a timer rather than on the door closing. Installation is a screwdriver job, but the deadbolt and strike plate have to line up accurately: the Bolt replaces the bolt and ships with its own strike plates, and a stiff or misaligned bolt is what makes a retrofit motor struggle. It fits standard American deadbolts with a 2 3/8 or 2 3/4 inch backset and doors 1.75 inches thick, and it is sold in a single Satin Nickel finish.
Is the Level Bolt (Matter) worth it?
Its value is the retrofit itself. If the reason you are shopping is that you refuse to put a keypad or a camera on the front door, very little else turns an existing deadbolt into a Matter device while keeping the exterior untouched and the old keys working. If your priority is a code on the door, a fingerprint reader, Apple home keys or remote access with nothing else to buy, a conventional keypad deadbolt with built-in Wi-Fi gives you more hardware for the money. Budget for a Thread border router or the Level Connect bridge if you want remote access, and for the Level Keypad if anyone in the household will not carry a phone.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Level Bolt (Matter) need a hub?
For local control it does not: the Level Home app talks to the lock over Bluetooth Low Energy and the physical key always works. For remote lock and unlock, voice commands and routines, it needs a Matter-over-Thread hub controller acting as a Thread border router, or the Level Connect Wi-Fi bridge, which is sold separately.
Does the Level Bolt (Matter) work with Apple Home?
Yes. It is Matter certified and works with Apple Home through a compatible Apple home hub acting as a Thread border router. Apple home keys are a separate feature offered on the Level Lock+ and Level Lock Pro, not on the Bolt.
Can the Level Bolt (Matter) be opened with a code?
Only with the Level Keypad, sold separately. Without it, entry is by the Level Home app, the smart home platform over Matter, or the physical key.
Does the Level Bolt replace the outside of my lock?
No. It replaces the deadbolt inside the door, so the exterior trim, cylinder and keys stay as they are. It ships with its own strike plates, which have to be fitted in place of the old ones.
How long does the Level Bolt (Matter) battery last?
Up to one year under typical conditions from a single CR2 lithium battery, which is included. The Level Home app warns before the cell runs out, and the physical key still opens the door when it is empty.
Does the Level Bolt (Matter) know if the door is open?
No. It has no door-position sensor, so Auto Lock works on a timer you set rather than on the door closing, and it does not report open or closed on its own.
