Shelly EM Gen3 is the better buy for most people: local API, MQTT, a local web interface, Home Assistant and SmartThings integration, a relay output and a 3 year warranty, at a much lower price. Emporia Vue 3 is the better choice only when you need whole-panel, per-breaker monitoring, since it covers up to 19 channels with 16 branch sensors included.

Scale versus control. Emporia Vue 3 measures the mains plus up to 16 individual breakers and reports every second, but only through Emporia's cloud. Shelly EM Gen3 measures two channels on a single phase and exposes everything locally over RPC, MQTT and its own web interface, plus a dry contact that can switch a contactor.

Shelly EM Gen3. It has an embedded web interface, a local API and MQTT, and stores 10 days of one-minute records on the device itself, so it keeps measuring and logging when the connection drops. Emporia Vue 3 has no local API, MQTT or local web interface and needs an active internet connection to work.

Emporia Vue 3 supports split-phase 120/240 V service natively, along with single-phase and a 3-phase 4-wire Wye setup that needs an extra 200 A sensor. Shelly EM Gen3 is specified as a single-phase two-channel meter, so a split-phase or three-phase whole-home install is outside its design.

Only Shelly EM Gen3, through a dry contact rated 2 A at 240 V that drives an external contactor. That is what lets owners replace a mechanical timer on a pool or well pump with a metered, schedulable circuit. Emporia Vue 3 has no relay output, although it does offer time-of-use and excess-solar load automations through its app.

Accept the cloud dependency and the 1 year warranty; if those bother you, Shelly EM Gen3 is the alternative.
