The EM Gen4 takes the formula of the EM Gen3, single-phase metering on two channels with a dry contact for contactor control, and adds the radios: Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5, Zigbee with repeater support, and Matter certification out of the box. Local access is unchanged and complete, with RPC, MQTT and an embedded web interface, and the device now keeps at least thirty days of minute data on 16 MB of flash. It stays a two-channel single-phase device, so it complements a whole-panel monitor rather than replacing one.

Who is the Shelly EM Gen4 for?
It is aimed at the same job as the EM Gen3, metering one or two circuits in a place where a DIN meter will not fit, but for a household that has moved to Matter or runs a Zigbee network. At 37 x 42 x 16 mm it disappears into a wall box or an appliance control enclosure, and the dry contact means the same device that measures a pump, a water heater or an EV charger can also switch it through a contactor. The supported clamps run from 50 A up to 120 A, so it scales from a single appliance to a whole single-phase supply.
What the EM Gen4 offers
The connectivity is the headline: Wi-Fi 6 on 2.4 GHz, Bluetooth 5 LE, Zigbee 802.15.4 with repeater behaviour, and Matter certification with no firmware gymnastics, which is what puts it in front of Apple Home, SmartThings and Google Home alongside Alexa and Home Assistant. Metering covers active and apparent power and energy plus power factor, with bi-directional measurement for solar, and the upgraded chip stores at least thirty days of one-minute records locally, exportable as CSV or JSON through RPC. Safety features are listed for overheating, overvoltage, overcurrent and overload. As with every Shelly, the local side is fully served: an embedded web interface, RPC over HTTP and WebSocket, MQTT, webhooks and scripting, all without a cloud account.
What to know before you buy
It is single-phase with two current channels, so it is not a whole-panel monitor and there is no three-phase mode. Only one 50 A clamp comes in the box; the second channel needs another CT. Accuracy is specified at +/- 2%, a step behind the Class B figure of the Pro range, and there is no Ethernet port, so a metal enclosure can still cost you the Wi-Fi link. Availability is the practical catch at the moment: the device is sold through Shelly's European store and has only just reached Amazon, so pricing and stock outside Europe are still thin.
Is the Shelly EM Gen4 worth it?
If you are buying now and care about Matter or Zigbee, it is the obvious pick over the EM Gen3, which offers the same two channels and relay without those radios. If your ecosystem is Home Assistant and you already have Wi-Fi coverage at the panel, the Gen3 does the same metering for less. Either way this is a device for instrumenting specific circuits: for per-breaker coverage of a whole panel, a sixteen-clamp monitor remains the better buy.
