Match the protocol to the job. Use Wi-Fi for high-bandwidth devices like security cameras and video doorbells, but avoid filling your network with dozens of battery sensors on it. Choose Zigbee or Z-Wave for door, motion and contact sensors, smart bulbs and switches, since their low-power mesh networks last for months on a battery and extend range as you add devices. Reach for Bluetooth on simple, close-range gadgets that pair directly with your phone. Whenever you can, pick Matter-certified devices: they work across Google Home, Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Home Assistant, future-proofing your purchases against ecosystem lock-in.
