Aqara Hub M3 vs Arlo Pro SmartHub

The Aqara Hub M3 wins clearly. It is a multi-protocol hub with Zigbee, Thread, Matter, Bluetooth and IR, dual-band Wi-Fi plus Ethernet with PoE, and it bridges devices into HomeKit, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant. The Arlo Pro SmartHub is cheaper but only supports Arlo cameras.

Scope. The Aqara Hub M3 is a central controller for a whole smart home, running local automations across Zigbee, Thread and Matter devices with a built-in 95dB siren. The Arlo Pro SmartHub is a base station whose only purpose is to link Arlo cameras and store their footage on a USB drive.

The Aqara Hub M3. It supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi and offers Ethernet with Power over Ethernet, so one cable can carry data and power. The Arlo Pro SmartHub is limited to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and standard Ethernet with a separate power supply.

Partly. Over Zigbee the Aqara Hub M3 pairs Aqara devices only, so third-party gear has to arrive over Matter instead. That makes it excellent as the center of an Aqara system and as a Matter controller, but it is not an open Zigbee coordinator the way a generic hub or a Home Assistant setup would be.

Buy the Aqara Hub M3 if you are building an Aqara smart home and want Zigbee, Thread, Matter, Bluetooth and IR in one unit, with local automations, PoE, a loud built-in siren and bridging into HomeKit, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant. Two units can even run as a redundant cluster.

Buy the Arlo Pro SmartHub only if you already own Arlo cameras and want faster response, extra range, 2K live streaming on Essential and Ultra models and local USB recording. It is not a smart home hub, and Arlo's event detection and recorded video still require a subscription.
