What the differences mean

What each hub is for

The TP-Link Tapo H500 is a Tapo system hub: cameras, doorbells and Sub-G sensors from one brand, with local recording. Home Assistant Green is a general home automation computer that ties together devices from many brands, with nothing brand-specific about it.

Camera recording

The TP-Link Tapo H500 records up to 16 Tapo cameras to its own storage and a 2.5-inch bay for up to 16TB, and puts a live wall on a TV over HDMI. Home Assistant Green has 32GB of storage for the system itself and reaches other cameras over ONVIF and RTSP rather than acting as a recorder out of the box.

Zigbee and Thread

Neither has these radios built in. Home Assistant Green becomes a Zigbee coordinator and Thread border router with a USB radio such as the Connect ZBT-2. The TP-Link Tapo H500 does not support either, so its sensors run on TP-Link's own Sub-1 GHz radio.

Wi-Fi
