Pros and cons

Is Matter right for you?

Pros

  • One device works with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant
  • Controlled locally, for faster and more reliable commands
  • Multi-admin: use several ecosystems with the same device
  • Cameras, doorbells, energy and appliances keep joining the standard
  • Setup is scanning a code with the app you already use

Cons

  • Needs a controller from an ecosystem, and Thread devices need a border router
  • Each ecosystem supports its own set of Matter device types
  • Zigbee and Z-Wave devices only join through a bridge
  • Control away from home still needs an internet-connected controller
Best forBuyers who do not want to be locked into one ecosystem

People who want devices that keep working if they switch from one ecosystem to another, or who share a home with someone on a different platform.

What you need

What you need to start

A Matter device needs a Matter controller from the ecosystem you use, and one that is a Thread border router for Matter devices that use Thread. One for each ecosystem:

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What devices use Matter?

Lights, plugs, switches, locks, thermostats, blinds, sensors, robot vacuums and, since Matter 1.5, cameras and doorbells, among others. Each category on this page links to its full list in our catalog.

Do I need a hub for Matter?

You need a Matter controller from the ecosystem you use: an Echo, a Nest speaker or display, a HomePod or Apple TV, a SmartThings hub, or Home Assistant. Matter devices that use Thread also need a Thread border router, which most of those controllers are.

Does Matter work without internet?

At home, yes: Matter is a local technology, so commands travel over your home network. Controlling devices away from home needs a controller connected to the internet.

What is the difference between Matter over Thread and Matter over Wi-Fi?

Both are Matter. Thread is a low-power mesh network suited to battery devices and needs a Thread border router; Wi-Fi uses the network you already have and suits devices plugged into power.

Can a Matter device work with Alexa and Apple Home at the same time?

Yes. Multi-admin lets one Matter device join several ecosystems at once, so Alexa, Apple Home and Google Home can all control it.

Is Matter free?

For users, yes: there is no fee to use Matter. The costs fall on makers, who join the Connectivity Standards Alliance and certify their products.
