FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What devices are compatible with SmartThings?

Devices from hundreds of brands that carry the Works with SmartThings badge, plus Matter devices. Each category on this page links to its full list in our catalog.

Is SmartThings free?

The app is: Samsung charges nothing to download or use it, and there is no subscription. The hub, if you need one, is bought once. Since October 2026 Samsung charges for its developer API; Samsung says app users are not affected, but tools that use the API, such as some Home Assistant setups, may need the paid plan.

Do I need a hub for SmartThings?

Not for Wi-Fi devices. Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread and Matter devices need a SmartThings hub: a dedicated hub, a SmartThings Station, or a recent Samsung TV, fridge or monitor with a hub built in.

Does SmartThings work with Matter?

Yes. SmartThings has supported Matter since October 2022, and its hubs that are Thread border routers also control Matter devices that use Thread.

Does SmartThings work with Alexa and Google Home?

Yes. SmartThings links to Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, and to Bixby through your Samsung account, so its devices can be controlled by voice.

Does SmartThings work without internet?

Partly. Zigbee, Z-Wave and Matter devices run on the hub itself, and Samsung says automations on the Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2 keep running when the internet is down.
