Smart Light Strips are the most flexible light in a connected home: a flexible tape of LEDs that goes where a fixture cannot, behind a TV, under a kitchen cabinet, along a stair nose or around a ceiling cove. They sit naturally alongside LED Bulbs, Wall Switches and Hubs, and they are usually the piece that makes a room look designed rather than merely lit. Choosing well means comparing a handful of specs that the packaging rarely puts side by side.
Strip Length is the first filter, and the one buyers most often get wrong. Measure the actual run you want to light and add slack for the corners, because a strip turns a corner by folding, which eats a few centimetres each time. Buying long and cutting down is the safe direction, but only if the strip is Cuttable: cutting is done at marked points, spaced by the Cut Interval, and on nearly every strip the piece you cut off stops working, because power enters from one end.
The other direction is Extendable. Some lines sell extension reels that clip onto the end, but the controller sets a hard Maximum Length that no extension can exceed. Past that limit the far end of the strip dims visibly, or the controller refuses to drive it at all. Budget strips are frequently sold in long reels that cannot be extended and cannot be cut, which makes them awkward anywhere the run is not a straight line.
Maximum Brightness is quoted in lumens for the whole strip, so it only means something next to the length. Fifteen hundred lumens over two metres is a genuine working light for a countertop, while the same fifteen hundred lumens stretched over ten metres is an accent that will disappear in daylight. Divide one by the other before comparing two products.
For lighting a room, look for strips above roughly 300 lumens per metre. For a glow behind a screen or a headboard, less than half of that is plenty, and an over-bright strip in that position is a distraction that will end up dimmed anyway.
Almost every smart strip does color. What separates them is how they handle white and how many parts of the strip can differ at once.
Addressable Zones is the number of sections that can show different colors at the same time. A strip with one zone is a single color end to end: it can be any color, but only one. Strips sold as RGBIC or gradient split the tape into ten, fifty or more independently driven segments, which is what makes a rainbow flow along a wall instead of the whole wall changing color together. It is also what makes Screen Sync worth having, since a single-zone strip can only average an entire movie frame into one color.
The cheapest strips mix white from their red, green and blue channels, and the result reads as pink or slightly green, and dims badly. A strip with Dedicated White LEDs carries separate white diodes, sold under names like RGBW, RGBWW or RGBCCT. If the strip will ever be used as ordinary light rather than decoration, this is the single spec most worth paying for. It usually comes with a real Color Temperature range, so the same strip can sit at warm amber in the evening and neutral white for working.
Wi-Fi strips connect straight to the router and need nothing else, which is why they dominate the cheap end. Zigbee and Thread strips are more reliable and react faster, but they need a hub or a border router already in the house, which is a cost the box does not mention. Bluetooth appears either as the setup channel or, on the cheapest models, as the only way to control the strip, which means no control from outside the house and no automations while the phone is away.
Matter support is worth checking separately, since it is what lets a strip work with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and Home Assistant without depending on the manufacturer keeping a cloud service alive.
Indoors, Adhesive Backing is usually enough on clean, smooth, room-temperature surfaces. It fails on textured paint and anywhere warm, which is why the better outdoor kits ship mounting clips instead.
Outdoors, or in a bathroom, check Weather Resistance. An IP44 rating survives splashes, IP65 survives rain and a garden hose, and anything unrated belongs strictly indoors. Note that many strips are rated for the tape but not for the controller, which then has to sit somewhere sheltered.
Two strips with identical hardware can feel completely different, and the difference is software. Dynamic Scenes are the preset animations, and their number and quality vary enormously between brands. Music Sync reacts to sound, but check whether the microphone is in the controller or in the phone: only the first keeps working after the phone leaves the room. Automations tie the strip to schedules and to other devices, and Power Off Memory decides whether the strip comes back the way you left it after someone flips the wall switch. A bundled Remote Control is what lets everyone else in the house use the light without installing anything.
Most can, at the marked cut points, and the spacing between those marks is the Cut Interval: some strips allow a cut every 8 cm, others only every 20 cm. Two warnings. The piece you cut off will not work, because power and data enter from the controller end only. And on strips with Addressable Zones, cutting mid-zone can leave the last segment behaving oddly.
RGB means the whole strip shows one color at a time. RGBIC means the strip is divided into independently controlled segments, which is what this catalog compares as Addressable Zones. If you want flowing rainbow effects, or you want the strip to follow what is on your TV, you need multiple zones. If you just want one color behind a cabinet, plain RGB is cheaper and just as good.
It depends entirely on the length, since Maximum Brightness covers the whole strip. As a rule of thumb, aim for more than 300 lumens per metre if the strip is the main light for a surface, and 100 to 150 lumens per metre for accent lighting behind a screen or along a hallway. Always divide the quoted lumens by the Strip Length before comparing two products.
Only for Zigbee and Thread strips. Wi-Fi models connect straight to your router, which makes them the simplest to set up but adds one more device to your network. Zigbee and Thread strips need a hub or a border router, which many homes already have inside a speaker or a smart display, and they generally respond faster and stay connected more reliably.
Only if it carries a Weather Resistance rating. IP44 handles splashes and is fine under an eave, IP65 handles rain and hose spray, and an unrated strip will fail within a season outside. Check the rating for the controller and power supply too, since they are often rated lower than the tape itself and need a sheltered spot.
Because the strip is mixing white from its red, green and blue diodes instead of using Dedicated White LEDs. No app setting fixes it. If you want usable white light, look for a strip described as RGBW, RGBWW or RGBCCT, which will also give you a proper Color Temperature range to move between warm and cool white.
Yes, with Screen Sync, but it works in two very different ways. An HDMI box sits between your sources and the TV and reads the picture directly, which is accurate and works with everything but costs as much as the strip. A camera clipped to the screen watches it instead, which is cheaper but needs a dark room and careful aiming. Either way, the effect needs many Addressable Zones to be worth it.
