Govee COB Strip Light 2 Review: A Dot-Free COB Run With Matter Built In

The verdict

The Govee COB Strip Light 2 is the affordable way into Govee's COB range, and COB is the whole point: 840 LEDs per metre sit close enough together that the strip reads as a drawn line of light instead of a row of dots, which matters anywhere the tape is mounted in open view. It is Matter certified over Wi-Fi, so it drops into Apple Home, SmartThings and Home Assistant as easily as into Alexa and Google Home, and the app side is unusually deep for the tier, with 64 scene modes, 16 music modes, DaySync and a prompt-driven effect builder. The compromise against the Pro strips above it is the bead: this one is RGBIC, so its 1000K to 10000K white is mixed from the colour channels rather than produced by dedicated white diodes. Buy it for a single continuous indoor run you have measured first, because a cut here is permanent.

Pros

  • 840 LEDs per metre in a COB layout, so the strip reads as a continuous line instead of a row of dots
  • Matter certified over Wi-Fi, which brings Apple Home, SmartThings and Home Assistant alongside Alexa and Google Home
  • RGBIC segment control with a 1000K to 10000K tunable white range
  • Cut marks every 10 cm, with acrylic adhesive backing and cable clips for a peel and stick install
  • 64 scene modes and 16 music modes, plus DaySync and the AI Lighting Bot 2.0 for prompt-built effects
  • DreamView links it with other Govee lights for coordinated scenes
  • Slim 12.6 mm by 6.8 mm profile that fits narrow gaps
  • One year manufacturer warranty

Cons

  • No dedicated white diodes: the white is mixed from the colour channels, unlike the RGBWWIC strips above it in the range
  • Cut sections cannot be reused, rejoined or extended, so trimming is permanent
  • Indoor only, with no ingress rating for damp or exposed runs
  • Joins the network over 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only
  • No handheld remote, so control is the app, voice or the control box
  • Govee publishes no brightness figure for the strip

Who is the Govee COB Strip Light 2 for?

This is the five metre, entry-level member of Govee's COB family, aimed at the installation where the tape itself is going to be seen: along a kitchen island, under cabinets, around a bed frame or down a shelf edge. A COB layout packs 840 diodes into every metre under a soft silicone sleeve, so there is no hotspotting and no dotted look from an angle, which is the one thing a standard SMD strip cannot fix with a diffuser channel. The strip is slim, 12.6 mm wide and 6.8 mm thick, so it slides into narrow architectural gaps, and it is driven by a control box on a 24V adapter drawing 36 watts, making it a plug-in fixture rather than anything wired in. It is an indoor product, so damp and exposed runs belong to a different line.

What the Govee COB Strip Light 2 offers

The lighting engine is RGBIC with Govee's LuminBlend+ colour processing, so separate stretches of the same run can hold separate colours, and the white range stretches from a very warm 1000K to a cold 10000K for everyday light rather than only accent colour. Matter is the headline platform feature: the strip is certified as H1AB2 over Wi-Fi, and that certification is what carries it into Apple Home, SmartThings and Home Assistant, with Alexa and Google Home supported directly. On top of that sits a large software layer, 64 preset scene modes and 16 music modes, DaySync for lighting that follows the time of day and your location, the AI Lighting Bot 2.0 that turns a written prompt into an effect, and DreamView for linking the strip with other Govee lights. Installation is deliberately simple: an acrylic adhesive backing for peel and stick mounting, four cable clips in the box, and cut marks every 10 cm so the run can be trimmed to the exact length.

What to know before you buy

Two limits shape the buying decision. The first is the bead. Govee's own line-up comparison marks this strip RGBIC while the Strip Light 2, the Strip Light 2 Pro and the COB Strip Light 2 Pro are all RGBWWIC, which means the tunable white here is mixed from the colour channels rather than coming off dedicated warm and cool diodes. If white light is the main job, the step up is worth weighing. The second is permanence: the strip can be cut at its marked points, but the offcut cannot be used and no connector or extension reel is offered for this series, so five metres is both the length and the ceiling, and the run needs measuring before the scissors come out. Beyond that, it joins the network over 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only, there is no handheld remote in the box, and Govee publishes no lumen figure for the strip, so brightness has to be judged against the denser Pro models rather than against a number.

Is the Govee COB Strip Light 2 worth it?

For a single, uninterrupted indoor run in a spot where the strip is visible, yes. The continuous COB line is a genuinely different product from dotted tape, and getting it with Matter certification, a wide tunable white range and Govee's scene library at the cheaper end of the COB range is a strong package. What is given up against the Pro versions is LED density and the dedicated white diodes, and against the extendable lines it is the ability to grow the run later. Treat it as a fixed-length fixture chosen for one measured wall, and it is the sensible pick; plan an installation with gaps, corners on separate segments or an outdoor stretch, and the money belongs elsewhere in the range.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Govee COB Strip Light 2 work with Apple Home?

Yes. The strip is Matter certified, and Matter is what brings it into Apple Home, so it can be added to the Home app with a HomePod or Apple TV acting as the hub. The same certification covers SmartThings and Home Assistant, while Alexa and Google Home are supported directly.

Can the Govee COB Strip Light 2 be cut, and can the pieces be rejoined?

It can be cut at a marked point every 10 cm, but the pieces cannot be rejoined. Govee states that the remaining part cannot be used after cutting and advises measuring the installation length in advance, and no extension or connector is offered for this series.

How long is it and how much power does it use?

This version is a single five metre run, sold as 16.4 feet, and it is not extendable, so five metres is also the maximum length. It runs from a bundled 24V power adapter through its control box and draws 36 watts.

Does the Govee COB Strip Light 2 need a hub?

No. It connects straight to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, with Bluetooth used for setup and local control, so no bridge or hub is needed for the app or for voice control.

Can it be used outdoors?

No. Govee sells it as an indoor strip, the box carries the Indoor badge and the listing gives no ingress rating, so it should be kept away from damp and exposed locations.

What is the difference between the COB Strip Light 2 and the COB Strip Light 2 Pro?

Density and bead type. The standard model uses RGBIC beads at 840 LEDs per metre, while the Pro uses RGBWWIC beads at 1344 LEDs per metre, which adds dedicated warm and cool white diodes and a tighter LED spacing. Both share the same 1000K to 10000K range, the same scene and music modes and the same Matter support.
