Heiman Smart Motion Sensor Review: Native Matter over Thread, So It Works With Everything

A motion and light sensor that speaks Matter directly, pairing with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings without a vendor hub.

The verdict

The Heiman HS1MS is one of the few motion sensors that is natively Matter over Thread rather than a Zigbee device behind a bridge. That single fact is its selling point: it joins Apple HomeKit, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings directly, with no brand hub in between, as long as you have a Thread border router in the house. It pairs motion detection with a light sensor, which is what lets an automation switch lights on for movement only when the room is actually dark. It runs on a CR2 battery and is an indoor sensor with no weather rating.

Best for
  • Matter and Thread households
  • Multi-platform homes
  • Lighting automations that need darkness
  • Avoiding vendor hubs

Pros

  • Native Matter over Thread, with no vendor hub required
  • Works with Apple HomeKit, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings
  • Built-in light sensor alongside motion detection
  • Battery powered on a CR2 cell, so no wiring
  • Automations supported through any Matter platform
  • Not tied to a single ecosystem

Cons

  • Requires a Thread border router, with no other radio option
  • Indoor only, with no weather resistance rating
  • Detection angle, range, sensitivity and timeout are not documented
  • Battery life and history records are not documented
  • Home Assistant support is not documented
  • No temperature sensing

Who is the Heiman HS1MS for?

It suits anyone who wants a motion sensor that will not be orphaned by an ecosystem change. Because Matter support is native rather than bridged, the same sensor works in Apple Home today and in Google Home or SmartThings tomorrow, without buying a new hub. The requirement is a Thread border router, which most modern smart speakers and displays now include. For a household with mixed phones and platforms, that flexibility is worth more than any single feature.

What it does

Motion detection with alerts, plus an ambient light sensor. The light reading is the part people underestimate: without it, a motion-triggered light turns on at midday too, so pairing the two in one device saves both a second sensor and an awkward automation. Automations are supported through whichever Matter platform you use, and the sensor runs on a CR2 battery, so there is no wiring.

What to know before you buy

A Thread border router is mandatory, since Thread is the only radio: there is no Zigbee, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or Z-Wave fallback. There is no weather resistance rating, so it is indoor only. Several practical specifications are undocumented for this model, including detection angle, detection range, sensitivity adjustment, detection timeout, battery life and history records, and detection angle and range are exactly what determine where a motion sensor can be mounted, so expect some trial and error. Home Assistant support is not documented either, though Matter devices generally work there. There is no temperature sensing.

Is the Heiman HS1MS worth it?

It is priced as a mainstream sensor, and native Matter over Thread at that price is genuinely useful, since it removes the hub tax that Zigbee sensors carry. The reservation is documentation: too many of the numbers that decide whether a motion sensor works in a given spot are simply not published. If you already have a Thread border router and want platform-agnostic sensors, it is a sound choice; if you need a specified detection range, look for a better-documented model.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Heiman motion sensor need a hub?

It needs a Thread border router, which many smart speakers and displays already provide. It does not need a Heiman or other vendor hub, because Matter support is native.

Which platforms work with it?

Apple HomeKit, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings, all through Matter.

Why does the light sensor matter?

It lets an automation trigger lights only when the room is actually dark, instead of every time motion is detected regardless of daylight.

How far does it detect?

Detection range and angle are not documented for this model, which is worth confirming before choosing a mounting position.

Can it be used outdoors?

No. It has no weather resistance rating, so it is an indoor sensor.

Why it needs a Thread coordinator

The Heiman Smart Motion Sensor speaks Thread, which needs a border router on your network to reach your phone and your automations. These are the border routers in our catalog that can run it.
