Synology DS1525+ Review: Five Bays and a Network Upgrade Slot

Ryzen with ECC to 32 GB, dual 2.5 GbE, two M.2 slots and a PCIe slot for faster networking later.

The verdict

The DS1525+ is the five-bay step up: RAID 5 and 6 across five drives, expansion to fifteen bays with two DX525 units, ECC memory to 32 GB, two M.2 storage-pool slots, dual 2.5 GbE, and a PCIe Gen3 network upgrade slot that the smaller models do not have. As with every Ryzen DiskStation, there is no hardware transcoding.

Best for
  • Growing libraries
  • RAID 6
  • Virtual machines
  • Future 10 GbE upgrade
  • Data integrity with ECC

Pros

  • Five bays, expandable to fifteen
  • PCIe network upgrade slot
  • ECC memory to 32 GB
  • Two M.2 NVMe storage-pool slots
  • Dual 2.5 GbE
  • RAID 5, 6 and 10

Cons

  • No hardware transcoding
  • 44.56 W under access
  • 22.6 dB(A), audible in a quiet room
  • Ships with 8 GB, ECC upgrades are pricey

Who is the DS1525+ for?

Buyers who have outgrown four bays and want a path to more: five drives now, fifteen with expansion units, and a PCIe slot to add faster networking when the array justifies it.

What the DS1525+ offers

Five hot-swap bays expandable to fifteen, two M.2 NVMe storage-pool slots, ECC memory to 32 GB, dual 2.5 GbE, a PCIe Gen3 x2 network upgrade slot, RAID 5, 6 and 10, and Container Manager plus Virtual Machine Manager.

What to know before you buy

No integrated graphics means no hardware transcoding. It draws 44.56 W and runs at 22.6 dB(A), so it is noticeably more present than a two-bay unit, and the network upgrade card is an extra purchase.

Is the DS1525+ worth it?

If five bays and the expansion path match your trajectory, it is a well-judged machine and the PCIe slot keeps it relevant. For media-first buyers, its lack of transcoding remains the sticking point across this whole Ryzen generation.

Frequently asked questions

What does the PCIe slot do?

It takes a Synology network card to add 10 GbE, which is the upgrade that matters once five drives are striped together and dual 2.5 GbE becomes the bottleneck.

How far can it expand?

To fifteen bays using two DX525 expansion units. That is the practical advantage over the four-bay models, which top out where they start or at nine bays for the DS925+.

4.5/ 5 avg ratingTaiwan flagHeadquartered in Taiwan

Synology is a Taiwanese company founded in 2000 that specializes in network attached storage, backup appliances and surveillance recorders. Its DiskStation Manager (DSM) operating system is the most established in the category, covering Btrfs snapshots, cloud sync, and a Surveillance Station package that turns a NAS into a local network video recorder for IP cameras. Models with Intel or AMD processors run Container Manager, which is the usual way people self-host Home Assistant and similar services at home.
