Synology DS1823xs+ Review: Built-in 10 GbE and a Faster Ryzen

The xs+ eight-bay: V1780B at 3.35 GHz, 10 GbE on board and RAID F1 for all-flash arrays.

The verdict

The DS1823xs+ is the enthusiast and small-business eight-bay. It ships with a 10 GbE port built in rather than as an upgrade, runs a faster Ryzen V1780B at 3.35 GHz, and supports RAID F1 alongside the usual levels, a mode designed for arrays of SSDs. It is a large, power-hungry machine at 87.93 W.

Best for
  • Built-in 10 GbE
  • All-flash arrays
  • Virtual machines
  • Small business
  • RAID 6

Pros

  • 10 GbE port built in
  • Ryzen V1780B at 3.35 GHz base
  • RAID F1 for SSD arrays
  • Eight bays, expandable to eighteen
  • ECC memory to 32 GB
  • PCIe Gen3 x8 slot

Cons

  • 87.93 W under access
  • No hardware transcoding
  • Significantly more expensive than the DS1825+
  • Warranty not stated alongside the other models

Who is the DS1823xs+ for?

Teams and enthusiasts who need 10 Gigabit out of the box and a processor with real clock speed behind it, without moving to a rackmount chassis.

What the DS1823xs+ offers

Eight hot-swap bays expandable to eighteen, a built-in 10 GbE port plus two Gigabit ports, two M.2 storage-pool slots, ECC memory to 32 GB, a PCIe Gen3 x8 slot, and RAID F1 in addition to RAID 5, 6 and 10.

What to know before you buy

It draws 87.93 W under access, far more than the DS1825+, and Synology does not publish a standard warranty figure in the same place as the other models. There is still no hardware transcoding.

Is the DS1823xs+ worth it?

The premium over the DS1825+ buys built-in 10 GbE, a much faster CPU and RAID F1. If you were going to add a 10 GbE card to a DS1825+ anyway, the gap narrows considerably.

Frequently asked questions

What is RAID F1?

A Synology mode for all-SSD arrays. It deliberately writes slightly more to one drive so the SSDs do not all reach their write endurance limit at the same moment, which would otherwise risk several failing together.

DS1823xs+ or DS1825+ with a 10 GbE card?

The xs+ gives a faster processor and RAID F1 on top of the built-in 10 GbE. If you only need the network speed, adding a card to the DS1825+ is cheaper and draws considerably less power.

Synology is a Taiwanese company founded in 2000 that specializes in network attached storage, backup appliances and surveillance recorders. Its DiskStation Manager (DSM) operating system is the most established in the category, covering Btrfs snapshots, cloud sync, and a Surveillance Station package that turns a NAS into a local network video recorder for IP cameras. Models with Intel or AMD processors run Container Manager, which is the usual way people self-host Home Assistant and similar services at home.
