Synology DS1825+ Review: Eight Bays for Serious Libraries

Eight drives to eighteen with expansion, ECC to 32 GB and a full-length PCIe slot.

The verdict

The DS1825+ is the eight-bay Ryzen DiskStation: RAID 6 across eight drives, expansion to eighteen bays, ECC memory to 32 GB, two M.2 storage-pool slots, dual 2.5 GbE and a PCIe Gen3 x8 slot for a 10 GbE card. At 6 kg empty and 60.1 W it is a substantially bigger machine than anything below it in the range.

Best for
  • Large media libraries
  • RAID 6
  • Virtual machines
  • Business backup
  • Future 10 GbE upgrade

Pros

  • Eight bays, expandable to eighteen
  • PCIe Gen3 x8 slot for 10 GbE
  • ECC memory to 32 GB
  • Two M.2 NVMe storage-pool slots
  • RAID 5, 6 and 10
  • Three USB ports

Cons

  • No hardware transcoding
  • 60.1 W under access
  • 23.8 dB(A), belongs out of a living room
  • 6 kg empty
  • Only dual 2.5 GbE as standard

Who is the DS1825+ for?

People storing tens of terabytes who want parity that survives two failures, plus the memory and expansion headroom to keep the machine useful for years.

What the DS1825+ offers

Eight hot-swap bays expandable to eighteen, two M.2 NVMe storage-pool slots, ECC memory to 32 GB, dual 2.5 GbE, a PCIe Gen3 x8 slot, three USB ports, RAID 5, 6 and 10, and full Container Manager and Virtual Machine Manager support.

What to know before you buy

No hardware transcoding again, and this is the point in the range where power and noise become real: 60.1 W under access and 23.8 dB(A) from two 120 mm fans. Eight drives also multiply the running cost.

Is the DS1825+ worth it?

For genuinely large storage it is the sensible Synology desktop, and cheaper per bay than the xs+ models. Just size the electricity and the drive budget honestly before committing.

Frequently asked questions

Is RAID 6 worth losing two drives to?

With eight large drives, yes. Rebuilding a big array takes many hours and a second failure in that window would destroy a RAID 5 volume. RAID 6 is the standard recommendation once you are past four bays.

Does it come with 10 GbE?

No, it ships with dual 2.5 GbE. The PCIe Gen3 x8 slot accepts a Synology 10 GbE card, which is the usual upgrade once the array can saturate 2.5 GbE.

4.5/ 5 avg ratingTaiwan flagHeadquartered in Taiwan

Synology is a Taiwanese company founded in 2000 that specializes in network attached storage, backup appliances and surveillance recorders. Its DiskStation Manager (DSM) operating system is the most established in the category, covering Btrfs snapshots, cloud sync, and a Surveillance Station package that turns a NAS into a local network video recorder for IP cameras. Models with Intel or AMD processors run Container Manager, which is the usual way people self-host Home Assistant and similar services at home.
