Synology DS2422+ Review: Twelve Bays on Gigabit

Twelve drives expandable to twenty-four, but four Gigabit ports and no 10 GbE as standard.

The verdict

The DS2422+ is about capacity: twelve bays, expandable to twenty-four with a DX1222, on the same Ryzen V1500B used across this generation. Its notable limitation is networking, four Gigabit ports rather than 2.5 or 10 GbE, so reaching the throughput twelve drives can produce means adding a card to the PCIe slot.

Best for
  • Maximum capacity
  • Archive storage
  • RAID 6
  • Business backup

Pros

  • Twelve bays, expandable to twenty-four
  • ECC memory to 32 GB
  • PCIe Gen3 x8 slot
  • RAID 5, 6 and 10 with SHR
  • Four Gigabit ports for aggregation

Cons

  • No 2.5 GbE or 10 GbE as standard
  • No M.2 NVMe slots
  • No hardware transcoding
  • 73.11 W under access
  • 9.5 kg empty

Who is the DS2422+ for?

Anyone whose problem is sheer volume of data: surveillance archives, media libraries, or business backups that have outgrown an eight-bay chassis.

What the DS2422+ offers

Twelve hot-swap bays expandable to twenty-four, ECC memory to 32 GB, four Gigabit ports, a PCIe Gen3 x8 slot, RAID 5, 6 and 10 with SHR, and Container Manager plus Virtual Machine Manager.

What to know before you buy

Four Gigabit ports is the weak point: even aggregated, that is well short of what twelve drives can deliver, so a 10 GbE card is close to mandatory. It has no M.2 slots, draws 73.11 W and weighs 9.5 kg empty.

Is the DS2422+ worth it?

As pure capacity per pound it makes sense, provided you budget for the network card. If throughput matters as much as capacity, the DS3622xs+ ships with 10 GbE already.

Frequently asked questions

Do four Gigabit ports add up to 4 Gbps?

Only across several clients at once, through link aggregation. A single transfer is still limited to one port, around 110 MB/s, which is why a 10 GbE card is the usual first upgrade.

Why no M.2 slots on a twelve-bay?

This generation of the large-chassis DiskStations puts expansion on the PCIe slot instead. Caching, if you want it, comes from SSDs in the regular bays or from an add-in card.

4.5/ 5 avg ratingTaiwan flagHeadquartered in Taiwan

Synology is a Taiwanese company founded in 2000 that specializes in network attached storage, backup appliances and surveillance recorders. Its DiskStation Manager (DSM) operating system is the most established in the category, covering Btrfs snapshots, cloud sync, and a Surveillance Station package that turns a NAS into a local network video recorder for IP cameras. Models with Intel or AMD processors run Container Manager, which is the usual way people self-host Home Assistant and similar services at home.
