Synology DS725+ Review: Two Bays, Ryzen, Room to Grow

ECC memory to 32 GB and two M.2 slots in a two-bay chassis, but no hardware transcoding.

The verdict

The DS725+ puts Plus-series internals into a two-bay body: a Ryzen processor, ECC memory expandable to 32 GB, two M.2 NVMe slots usable as storage pools, and a 2.5 GbE port. It runs Container Manager and Virtual Machine Manager, but like the other Ryzen DiskStations it has no integrated graphics and therefore no hardware transcoding.

Best for
  • Virtual machines
  • Docker and self-hosting
  • Data integrity with ECC
  • Small footprint

Pros

  • ECC memory expandable to 32 GB
  • Two M.2 NVMe slots usable as storage pools
  • Runs Docker and virtual machines
  • 2.5 GbE alongside Gigabit
  • Three-year warranty

Cons

  • No hardware transcoding (no integrated GPU)
  • No RAID 5 or RAID 6 (two bays)
  • Only one USB port
  • Costs more than several four-bay models

Who is the DS725+ for?

Someone who needs serious memory headroom and ECC but only has room, or need, for two drives. It is the compact self-hosting box of the Synology range.

What the DS725+ offers

Two hot-swap bays, two M.2 NVMe slots that can hold storage pools, ECC memory expandable to 32 GB, one 1 GbE plus one 2.5 GbE port, Container Manager, Virtual Machine Manager, Btrfs with snapshots and a three-year warranty.

What to know before you buy

No hardware transcoding, so it is a poor fit for a Plex library that needs converting. Two bays also means mirroring only, with no RAID 5, and there is a single USB port.

Is the DS725+ worth it?

It is the right two-bay if your workload is containers and virtual machines rather than media. If you want a two-bay for streaming, the much cheaper DS225+ transcodes and this does not.

Frequently asked questions

Why choose this over the DS225+?

Memory: the DS725+ takes 32 GB of ECC against the DS225+ ceiling of 6 GB, and it adds two M.2 slots. The DS225+ wins on price and is the only one of the two that transcodes video in hardware.

Can it run virtual machines?

Yes, Virtual Machine Manager is supported, and the 32 GB memory ceiling is what makes that practical. Budget memory generously before planning several guests.

4.5/ 5 avg ratingTaiwan flagHeadquartered in Taiwan

Synology is a Taiwanese company founded in 2000 that specializes in network attached storage, backup appliances and surveillance recorders. Its DiskStation Manager (DSM) operating system is the most established in the category, covering Btrfs snapshots, cloud sync, and a Surveillance Station package that turns a NAS into a local network video recorder for IP cameras. Models with Intel or AMD processors run Container Manager, which is the usual way people self-host Home Assistant and similar services at home.
