Synology DS925+ Review: Four Bays, ECC Memory, No Transcoding

A Ryzen four-bay with dual 2.5 GbE, two M.2 slots and 32 GB ECC support, but no integrated graphics at all.

The verdict

The DS925+ is the capable one: four bays expandable to nine, RAID 5 and RAID 6, two M.2 NVMe slots, dual 2.5 GbE with link aggregation, and 32 GB of ECC memory. The catch is specific and worth understanding before buying: the AMD Ryzen V1500B has no integrated GPU, so this machine cannot transcode video in hardware despite being the most expensive model here.

Best for
  • Larger libraries
  • RAID 5 and RAID 6
  • Virtual machines
  • Business and prosumer use
  • Data integrity with ECC

Pros

  • Four hot-swap bays, expandable to nine
  • RAID 5, RAID 6 and RAID 10
  • Two M.2 NVMe slots usable as storage pools
  • Dual 2.5 GbE with link aggregation
  • ECC memory up to 32 GB
  • 40 Surveillance Station camera channels
  • Three-year warranty

Cons

  • No hardware transcoding (no integrated GPU)
  • Highest power draw here at 37.91 W
  • Loudest Synology here at 20.5 dB(A)
  • Ships with only 4 GB of memory
  • No 10 GbE port

Who is the DS925+ for?

Buyers who need parity RAID, real memory headroom and room to grow, and whose media is either played directly or handled by another device. It is the strongest platform here for virtual machines and for keeping data intact over years.

What the DS925+ offers

Four hot-swap bays (up to nine with the DX525 expansion unit), 80 TB raw, two M.2 NVMe slots usable as storage pools, dual 2.5 GbE with link aggregation, 4 GB of ECC DDR4 expandable to 32 GB, RAID 5, 6 and 10, Surveillance Station with 40 channels, and a three-year warranty.

What to know before you buy

No hardware transcoding: the Ryzen V1500B has no integrated graphics, so Plex must convert in software or not at all. It is also the loudest and thirstiest Synology here at 20.5 dB(A) and 37.91 W, and at 2.26 kg empty it is a substantially bigger box.

Is the DS925+ worth it?

If you need four bays, ECC and virtualization, it is the most complete machine in this group. If your main use is a Plex library that needs converting on the fly, its lack of an integrated GPU makes the far cheaper DS225+ or a UGREEN Intel model the better technical fit.

Frequently asked questions

Why can a more expensive NAS not transcode?

Transcoding depends on an integrated GPU, not on CPU speed. The AMD Ryzen V1500B in the DS925+ has no graphics silicon at all, so there is nothing to hand the work to. A cheaper Intel chip with UHD Graphics will out-stream it every time.

What do the M.2 slots do here?

They take NVMe SSDs that can serve as a read and write cache in front of the hard drives, and they can also hold a storage pool of their own, which means a genuinely fast all-flash volume rather than just acceleration.

Is ECC memory worth it at home?

It corrects single-bit memory errors before they can be written to disk. For a machine holding the only copy of family photos for a decade, it removes one quiet failure mode, though it matters far less than actually having an offsite backup.

4.5/ 5 avg ratingTaiwan flagHeadquartered in Taiwan

Synology is a Taiwanese company founded in 2000 that specializes in network attached storage, backup appliances and surveillance recorders. Its DiskStation Manager (DSM) operating system is the most established in the category, covering Btrfs snapshots, cloud sync, and a Surveillance Station package that turns a NAS into a local network video recorder for IP cameras. Models with Intel or AMD processors run Container Manager, which is the usual way people self-host Home Assistant and similar services at home.
