Judge the price, not the percentage
Prime Day banners quote the discount against a list price that may not have been charged in months. Judge the price itself, not the percentage, and compare it with what you saw the device sell for before the event.
Mind the deal clock
Prime-exclusive prices end at a set time, and the stock can run out before then. When Amazon dates the deal, its product page shows a countdown to the end, so you know how long you have.
Check the ecosystem before the price
A cheap sensor that does not talk to your hub is not a deal. Every product page lists Alexa, Google Home, HomeKit, SmartThings, Home Assistant and Matter support, so you can rule out the incompatible bargains first.
Shortlist before the window opens
The best Prime Day prices are gone in hours. Compare the two or three devices you actually want now, and when the event starts you only have to check the price.

Amazon confirms the Prime Day window a few weeks in advance, and it changes every year. As soon as the dates are official they are published here, with a countdown. Amazon has also run a second Prime members event in the autumn in recent years, and the deals below stay live whether or not an event is running.
Do you need Amazon Prime for these deals?
Prime Day pricing itself is reserved for Prime members, and new members can use the free trial to get it. This page lists those Prime-exclusive deals first, marked with the Prime logo; the discounts after them can be bought by anyone.
Are Prime Day smart home deals actually cheaper?
Some are: the big security and robot vacuum brands often hit their lowest prices of the year. Elsewhere the discount is often the same one that ran in the weeks before with a bigger banner, so judge the price itself, not only the percentage.
Which smart home devices are worth buying on Prime Day?
