Aiper Scuba S1 Review: Four Zones and a 3 Micron Filter Without the Flagship Price

The verdict

The Scuba S1 is Aiper's mid-range machine and it covers more of the pool than its price suggests: floor, walls, waterline and shallow areas from about 12 inches deep, in five selectable modes including a scheduled weekly plan. Filtration is the strong card, a 180 micron basket plus a 3 micron ultra-fine insert in a 3.5 litre basket, so it holds the silt and pollen that coarser machines return to the water. Its limits are the in-ground rating and a 1,600 square foot pool, which makes it a fit for typical residential pools rather than large ones.

Best for
  • In-ground pools up to 50 feet
  • Fine debris and pollen
  • Weekly scheduled cleaning
  • Waterline scrubbing

Pros

  • Cleans floor, walls, waterline and shallow areas from about 12 inches
  • Dual stage filtration with a 3 micron ultra-fine insert
  • 3.5 litre filter basket, large for the class
  • Five modes including ECO and a weekly schedule
  • Light for the category, so lifting it out is a one-hand job

Cons

  • In-ground pools only
  • Smallest rated pool area of the mid-range machines at 1,600 square feet
  • Suction is modest at 4,200 GPH
  • No charging dock and no smart home integrations

Who is the Aiper Scuba S1 for?

This is a cordless cleaner for in-ground pools up to 1,600 square feet and 50 feet in length, which covers most residential pools with a margin. It is aimed at the owner who wants the waterline and the shallow ledge included rather than the floor alone, without paying flagship money for it.

It is on the lighter side of the field, which matters at the one moment every cordless robot has in common: lifting it out over the coping at the end of the cycle.

What stands out on paper

Coverage first. Floor, wall, waterline and a 12 inch shallow area is the full ladder short of surface skimming, and the machine is rated to climb walls at close to vertical and to cross obstacles about 1.6 inches high. An active PVC roller brush does the scrubbing that suction alone never does.

Filtration is where it goes beyond its class. The 3.5 litre basket takes a 180 micron mesh for leaves and debris plus a MicroMesh insert rated at 3 microns for pollen, algae and silt, which is the specification that usually separates the premium tier. Five modes, including an ECO run of 45 minutes every 48 hours and a weekly schedule, decide how the 180 minute battery gets spent.

What to know before you buy

It is rated for in-ground pools only, so a soft-liner above-ground pool is out of scope. The 1,600 square foot rating is also the smallest of the mid-range machines, which is fine for a typical pool and thin for a large one.

Charging takes three to four hours through the included DC wall charger, longer than the 180 minute run, and there is no dock: the robot is plugged in directly. As with the rest of the category there are no smart home integrations, so the Aiper app over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth is where modes, history and firmware updates live.

Is the Aiper Scuba S1 worth it?

For a typical in-ground pool it covers the surfaces that matter and filters better than most machines near its price. The combination of a waterline pass and a 3 micron insert is what usually costs considerably more.

What you trade away is raw suction, at 4,200 GPH rather than the 6,000 to 8,000 of the bigger machines, and rated pool size. On a large pool with heavy leaf fall, a stronger pump and a bigger battery will finish the job in fewer runs.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Aiper Scuba S1 clean the waterline?

Yes. Its coverage is floor, walls, waterline and shallow areas from about 12 inches of depth, so sun shelves and steps are included rather than skipped.

How long does it run and how long does it charge?

Up to 180 minutes per charge, with a three to four hour recharge through the included DC wall charger. There is no dock, so the robot is plugged in directly between cycles.

What is the difference between the two filters?

The basket takes a 180 micron mesh, which catches leaves, insects and general debris, and a MicroMesh insert rated at 3 microns, which also holds pollen, algae and fine silt. The fine insert clogs faster, so it is rinsed more often.

Can I use it in an above-ground pool?

No. Aiper rates the Scuba S1 for in-ground pools. Above-ground pools have soft liners and almost no wall to climb, so they need a model that lists them explicitly.

Does it work with Alexa, Google Home or Home Assistant?

No. There are no smart home platform integrations. The Aiper app connects over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for modes, cleaning history and over the air firmware updates while the robot is at the surface.
