eero 7 vs eero Outdoor 7

Full Routers comparison in 2026

Updated November 2026
Data from the official eero site.
2026 verdict
These two eero 7 generation nodes do different jobs, and indoors the eero 7 is the one to buy first, while the eero Outdoor 7 is the weatherproof node that pushes the same network outside.
The eero 7 is the indoor router and mesh node: dual-band Wi-Fi 7 rated 5 Gbps, two 2.5 GbE ports and the ability to start an eero network on its own. The eero Outdoor 7 is sealed to IP66, powered over PoE+ through a single 2.5 GbE port and rated for far less Wi-Fi speed, and it cannot create a network or connect to a modem, only extend an existing eero mesh into the yard, a barn or a driveway. Both share the three-year warranty, Multi-Link Operation, the Thread border router, the Matter controller, the Zigbee hub and the same app. Start an eero home with the eero 7, then add the eero Outdoor 7 where indoor nodes cannot reach.

What the differences mean

First router or extender

The eero 7 is a full router that can start an eero network and connect to a modem. The eero Outdoor 7 is only an extender, so it needs an existing eero network and cannot replace a main router.

Weatherproof shell and power

The eero Outdoor 7 is sealed to IP66 and powered over PoE+ through one 2.5 GbE port that carries both power and backhaul, and it is rated for harsh outdoor temperatures. The eero 7 is an indoor unit with a standard power adapter.

Wi-Fi speed and ports

The eero 7 is rated at 5 Gbps with two 2.5 GbE ports per unit, while the eero Outdoor 7 is rated at 2.8 Gbps with a single Ethernet port. The indoor node is faster and more connectable, the outdoor one trades that for reach.

Coverage area

The eero Outdoor 7 is rated for up to 15,000 square feet outdoors and can bridge point to point across up to 1,000 feet of line of sight. The eero 7 is built to cover rooms, not open ground.

Which one to buy if

  • you are starting an eero network from scratch

The eero 7 is a router that connects to a modem, where the eero Outdoor 7 only extends a network that already exists.

  • you need Wi-Fi on a patio, at a barn or down a driveway

Its IP66 shell, PoE+ power and outdoor range reach places an indoor node cannot.

  • you want the faster node with more wired ports indoors

The eero 7 is rated higher and carries two 2.5 GbE ports against the single port of the outdoor unit.

  • you can run Ethernet to the far point

Hardwired over PoE+ is where owners report the eero Outdoor 7 working at its best and most stable.

What owners say

Owners of both eero 7 nodes praise the same foundation: setup that takes minutes in the app and coverage that finally reaches the places a previous router could not. On the indoor eero 7, owners describe faster speeds on upper floors, fewer dropouts and a network that runs without attention, and their complaints are the eero Plus subscription behind content filtering, dynamic DNS, the IoT network and failover, plus no web interface or VPN. eero Outdoor 7 owners are happiest when they hardwire it, reporting strong, stable coverage of a patio, a camera run or a detached building, and they single out the built-in Thread, Matter and Zigbee hub. Their warning is specific: on a wireless backhaul the link can drop to 2.4 GHz, run slower than expected and occasionally disconnect, and the unit must be mounted vertically.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is better overall: eero 7 or eero Outdoor 7?

They are not rivals so much as partners. The eero 7 is the better indoor router and the one to buy first, while the eero Outdoor 7 is the weatherproof node you add afterward to reach a yard, a barn or a camera at the edge of the property.

Can the eero Outdoor 7 be used on its own?

No. It is an extender, not a router, so it needs an existing eero network and cannot connect to a modem. An eero 7 can start that network on its own.

How is the eero Outdoor 7 powered?

Over PoE+ through its single 2.5 GbE port, which also carries the wired backhaul. It needs a PoE+ source such as the included adapter or a PoE+ switch, not standard PoE.

Do both nodes support Thread, Matter and Zigbee?

Yes. The eero 7 and the eero Outdoor 7 each work as a Thread border router, a Matter controller and a Zigbee hub, so smart home devices join through either without a separate bridge.

Who should buy the eero 7?

Anyone starting or growing an indoor eero mesh who wants the faster node, two 2.5 GbE ports and a router that can connect directly to a modem.

Who should buy the eero Outdoor 7?

Existing eero households that need reliable Wi-Fi outside, on a patio, in a detached building or along a driveway, and that can power it over PoE+.
