X-Sense SC07-MR Review: A Combined Smoke and CO Alarm With a Five-Year Sealed Battery

The verdict

The X-Sense SC07-MR puts smoke and carbon monoxide detection in one ceiling unit, with a photoelectric smoke sensor, an electrochemical CO sensor that raises an in-app warning from 100 ppm, and an LCD readout on the alarm itself. Its best feature is interconnection: alarms link to each other over RF without any base station, so one detecting smoke sets off every alarm in the house. Smart features are the weak point, needing an X-Sense base station for Wi-Fi, and offering no Alexa, Google Home or HomeKit support (Home Assistant is the one integration). It runs five years on CR123A batteries with a matching five year warranty.

  • Whole-house interconnected alarms
  • Homes with gas appliances
  • Home Assistant users
  • Long-life battery installs

Who is the X-Sense SC07-MR for?

Combining smoke and carbon monoxide in one unit saves a ceiling fixture and covers both of the hazards that need a detector, which makes it a sensible default for a home with gas appliances, a boiler or an attached garage. It is designed to be installed in numbers: alarms interconnect over RF, so a fire in the kitchen sounds the alarm in the bedrooms, which is the difference between waking up and not. The five year battery and five year warranty mean it is close to a fit-and-forget device once mounted.

How it detects

Smoke detection is photoelectric, with a sensitivity range of 1.29 to 2.36 percent obscuration per foot. Photoelectric sensors respond well to the smouldering fires that produce a lot of smoke before flames, which is the common house fire pattern overnight. Carbon monoxide is handled by a separate electrochemical sensor, the standard technology for CO, and the app warns from 100 ppm. CO is colourless and odourless, so a detector is the only way to know it is there. Both hazards raise their own alerts, there is a low battery warning, and the LCD shows status on the device without needing to open an app. The built-in siren is rated at 85 dB at 3 m.

What to know before you buy

The smart side is limited. Wi-Fi connectivity requires an X-Sense base station, sold separately, so a single alarm on its own is not a connected device. Once connected, the only supported platform is Home Assistant: there is no Alexa, no Google Home, no Apple HomeKit, no SmartThings, no IFTTT and no Matter, so voice announcements and cross-brand routines are out. Automations are not supported either, meaning the alarm cannot trigger other devices such as lights on a fire event. It is battery only, with no mains wiring option, using CR123A cells. There is no built-in emergency light, no pathlight, no steam check to reduce false alarms from bathrooms and kitchens, and self-test capability is not documented.

Is the X-Sense SC07-MR worth it?

Judge it primarily as a life safety device, and on that basis it is strong: two sensor types, RF interconnection between units without extra hardware, five years of battery and a five year warranty, at a mid-range price. Judge it as a smart home device and it is thin, tied to a base station and a single platform. Buy several for the interconnect, and treat the app as a bonus rather than the reason.

Frequently asked questions

Does the X-Sense SC07-MR detect both smoke and carbon monoxide?

Yes. It uses a photoelectric sensor for smoke and a separate electrochemical sensor for carbon monoxide, with an in-app warning from 100 ppm.

Do the alarms talk to each other?

Yes. They interconnect over RF with other X-Sense Link+ and Link+ Pro alarms, and that works without the base station, so one alarm detecting smoke sounds the others.

Does it need a base station?

For Wi-Fi and app features, yes: an X-Sense base station is required. The alarm itself and the RF interconnection work without it.

Which smart home platforms does it support?

Home Assistant only. Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit, Samsung SmartThings, IFTTT and Matter are all unsupported.

How long does the battery last?

Five years, using CR123A batteries, matched by a five year warranty. There is no mains-wired option.
