The Ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced is the better smart thermostat here, and by some distance over the Amazon Smart Thermostat. It supports remote room sensors, detects occupancy and proximity, reads humidity, sends temperature alerts and works with Apple HomeKit, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant, on a 4 inch color touchscreen with dual band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a three year warranty. The Amazon Smart Thermostat stays at the entry level: Alexa only, a monochrome display without touch, temperature sensing only and a one year warranty, in exchange for a much lower price. Both include a trim plate and schedule automatically, and neither supports Matter. Pick the Amazon Smart Thermostat for basic Alexa control, and the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced for multi-room comfort on any platform.

What the differences mean

Smart home platforms

The Amazon Smart Thermostat is Alexa only. The Ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced adds Apple HomeKit, Google Home, SmartThings and Home Assistant, so it keeps working whatever assistant the house moves to.

Room sensors and occupancy

The Ecobee supports remote sensors and detects occupancy, letting it heat the rooms people use. The Amazon Smart Thermostat reads only the temperature at the wall and supports no external sensors.

Screen

A 4 inch color touchscreen that shows time and weather on the Ecobee, against a small monochrome LED display without touch on the Amazon Smart Thermostat, which shows only the temperature.

Wi-Fi

The Ecobee connects on 2.4 or 5 GHz and has Bluetooth. The Amazon Smart Thermostat is 2.4 GHz only.

Warranty

Three years on the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced against one year on the Amazon Smart Thermostat.

Which one to buy if

What owners say

Ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced owners, many of them switching from a Nest, praise a bright, responsive touchscreen and an iOS app and web portal they describe as polished and very Apple-like to set up. Remote sensors are the standout, called a must-have when the thermostat sits in a rarely used hallway, and several report noticeably lower bills, sometimes offset by a utility rebate, plus detailed usage reports that separate auxiliary heat on heat pumps. Their warnings: installation needs constant power, so homes without a C wire use the included adapter or run a new wire; Ecobee pulled its API program, making Home Assistant harder; scheduling is less granular than a fully custom one; and there is no fan circulate mode.

Price history compared

Every price change of both, in the same store, so the gap between the two lines is what one costs more than the other.
