2026 verdict
Anyone who wants the thermostat to know which room is occupied should buy the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium rather than the Amazon Smart Thermostat.
The Ecobee includes a remote SmartSensor, detects occupancy, measures humidity, CO2 and VOCs, and speaks through a built-in speaker with Siri or Alexa, on a 4 inch color touchscreen with a three year warranty. The Amazon Smart Thermostat is a deliberately basic unit: Alexa control only, a monochrome display without touch, temperature sensing only and a one year warranty, though it is far cheaper and includes a trim plate. Both schedule automatically and neither supports Matter. Choose the Amazon Smart Thermostat as a low cost Alexa upgrade from a dumb thermostat, and the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium for multi-room comfort and every major platform.

What the differences mean
Smart home platforms
The Amazon Smart Thermostat works only with Alexa. The Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium works with Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit, SmartThings and Home Assistant, so it fits whatever ecosystem the house uses now or later.
Room sensors and occupancy
The Ecobee includes a remote sensor and detects which rooms are occupied, so it can heat the bedroom rather than the hallway. The Amazon Smart Thermostat supports no external sensors and has no occupancy detection.
Sensors on the wall
The Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium reads temperature, humidity, CO2 and VOCs and warns about poor air. The Amazon Smart Thermostat reads temperature only and sends no alerts of any kind.
Screen and voice
A 4 inch color touchscreen with a speaker and built-in assistant on the Ecobee, against a small monochrome LED display without touch or speaker on the Amazon model, which takes voice commands through a separate Echo.
Warranty
Three years on the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium, one year on the Amazon Smart Thermostat.

- your home runs on Apple Home or Google Home
The Amazon Smart Thermostat is Alexa only; the Ecobee covers both, plus SmartThings and Home Assistant.
- you care about indoor air quality
Only the Ecobee measures CO2 and VOCs and alerts you when the air is poor.

What owners say
Owners of the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium put the bundled SmartSensor first: moved to a bedroom or living area, it evens out temperatures that a single wall reading could not. They also credit the routine-learning schedule with shorter furnace and AC run times, like how the screen wakes as they approach, and use the built-in Alexa or Siri for quick changes. On the other side, a noticeable share found installation harder than expected in older homes, sometimes calling an electrician, and a few report readings thrown off by a nearby vent, occasional app bugs and slow customer support. Fire and intrusion alerts are subscription features, which some owners only learn after buying.
