2026 verdict
Once the bedroom matters more than the hallway, the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced pulls ahead of the Nest Thermostat, because it supports remote room sensors and the Nest does not.
The Ecobee also brings a 4 inch color touchscreen, full Home Assistant support, a trim plate in the box and a three year warranty against one. The Nest Thermostat is the more affordable, compact option with a mirrored colour display, an ambient light sensor and an eco mode that owners credit with real savings. Both detect occupancy and proximity, read humidity, send temperature alerts, use 2.4 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi with Bluetooth and work with Apple HomeKit, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings, and neither supports Matter. Choose the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced for multi-room comfort and a touchscreen, and the Nest Thermostat for budget eco savings in a Google home.

What the differences mean
Room sensors
The Ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced supports remote sensors that pick the room to heat by presence. The Nest Thermostat has no remote sensor support, so it always works from the reading where it is mounted.
Screen and controls
The Ecobee has a 4 inch color touchscreen. The Nest Thermostat has a smaller 2.4 inch colour display behind a mirrored lens, controlled by a touch strip on the side rather than the screen.
Home Assistant
Home Assistant support is full on the Ecobee and partial on the Nest Thermostat, though Ecobee owners note the pulled API makes it harder than it used to be.
Warranty
Three years on the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced, one year on the Nest Thermostat.
Finish
The Nest Thermostat comes in several colors to match a wall; the Ecobee comes in one finish but includes a trim plate to hide old marks.

What owners say
Owners of both thermostats report lower heating bills, often helped by a utility rebate, and both groups warn that a missing C wire complicates installation. Ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced owners, many of them former Nest users, single out remote sensors that fix a hallway-mounted thermostat, detailed HVAC reports and a polished app and web portal, and complain that Ecobee pulled its API program and that scheduling is less granular. Nest Thermostat owners single out an eco mode that uses phone location and the motion sensor, weather on the display and a quick install, and complain about being limited to the Google Home app, a touch strip that feels less intuitive and an eco mode that can push the temperature too far.
