The Ecobee carries three years of warranty against two, connects on 5 GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, includes a trim plate and has a 4 inch color touchscreen, and it is usually the cheaper of the two. The Honeywell Home T9 Smart Thermostat answers with a Smart Room Sensor already in the box, a built-in speaker and filter and maintenance reminders. What the differences mean

Sensor in the box

The Honeywell Home T9 Smart Thermostat includes one Smart Room Sensor with up to 200 ft of range. The Ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced supports sensors chosen by presence but ships without one, so budget for it if multi-room balancing is the goal.

Wi-Fi

The Ecobee joins 2.4 or 5 GHz networks and has Bluetooth. The T9 is 2.4 GHz only, and one of its owners had trouble with a mesh router.

Maintenance and speaker

The T9 reminds you about filter changes and maintenance and has a built-in speaker. The Ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced has neither.

Screen

Both are touchscreens. The Ecobee's is a 4 inch color display; the catalog does not list the T9's as a color screen.

Warranty

Three years on the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced, two on the Honeywell Home T9 Smart Thermostat.

Which one to buy if

What owners say

Owners of both thermostats agree the reason to buy is room sensing: each group describes the system heating the room people are actually in rather than the hallway. Ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced owners also praise a polished app and web portal, detailed HVAC reports and lower bills, sometimes with a utility rebate, while Honeywell Home T9 Smart Thermostat owners praise HomeKit pairing, the C wire adapter in the box and a unit that often fits an older Honeywell wall plate. The complaints split: Ecobee owners mention a tricky install without a C wire, a pulled API that complicates Home Assistant and less granular scheduling, and T9 owners mention a fiddly Resideo app, Wi-Fi changes that set a permanent hold and sensor batteries that drain fast.
