It adds TVOC and CO2 sensing with air quality alerts, an occupancy sensor, 5 GHz Wi-Fi, a trim plate and a speaker with a choice of Siri or Alexa, and it carries the better owner rating of the pair. The Ecobee Smart Thermostat Essential is the cheaper route to the parts most people use daily: the same 4 inch 540 x 540 colour touchscreen, proximity and humidity sensing, support for remote SmartSensors chosen by presence, the learning schedule, the Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant list and the same three year warranty. Neither supports Matter. Go with the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium for air quality and voice on the wall, and the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Essential to spend less and add a sensor only if a room needs one.

What the differences mean
Room sensor included
The Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium ships with a remote temperature sensor. The Ecobee Smart Thermostat Essential supports the same sensors but puts none in the box, so evening out a cold room means buying one.
Air quality monitoring
Only the Premium measures TVOC and CO2 and warns when the air turns stale, with filter change reminders. The Essential stops at temperature and humidity.
Voice on the wall
