The Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium also adds air quality sensing (TVOC and CO2), a built-in speaker for voice control, Apple HomeKit and Home Assistant support and a 3-year warranty against 2 years. The Google Nest Learning Thermostat still has a case: it is smaller and lighter, comes in several metal finishes, includes an ambient light sensor and builds its schedule by learning routines with almost no setup effort. Neither supports Matter. Choose the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium for uneven rooms or a HomeKit home, and the Google Nest Learning Thermostat for a decor-friendly, set-and-forget stat in a Google or Alexa home.

What the differences mean

Remote room sensor

The Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium ships with a temperature sensor and can prioritize it by presence, so it reads the room people are actually in. The Google Nest Learning Thermostat includes none, and its sensor selection follows a time schedule instead, which suits a fixed routine less well than a moving family.

Screen and controls

The Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium has a 4-inch color touchscreen at 540 x 540 px, so you can change the schedule on the wall. The Google Nest Learning Thermostat has a 2-inch color display with no touch input, and detailed scheduling happens in the app.

Voice and speaker

Only the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium has a built-in speaker and voice control on the device itself. On the Google Nest Learning Thermostat you talk to a separate smart speaker or phone instead.

Apple and Home Assistant support

The Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium works with Apple HomeKit and fully with Home Assistant, on top of Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings. The Google Nest Learning Thermostat has no HomeKit support and only partial Home Assistant support, so it fits Google and Alexa homes best.

Air quality and alerts

The Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium measures TVOC and CO2 and sends air quality alerts, with fire and intrusion alerts behind a subscription. The Google Nest Learning Thermostat only alerts on temperature.

Size and looks

The Google Nest Learning Thermostat is 83 mm wide and weighs 243 g, in several metal finishes. The Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium is 103.89 mm wide and weighs 630 g, and it has no color options, so it reads more like a small screen than a piece of decor.

Which one to buy if

What owners say

Owners of both thermostats agree that the routine is what they notice least: once wired in, each one keeps the house comfortable without daily attention, and both groups mention that older wiring can turn installation into a small project. Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium owners single out the SmartSensor in the box for balancing a hot upstairs and a cold hallway, the touchscreen that wakes as you approach and voice control through the built-in speaker, while some report app glitches, readings thrown off by a nearby vent and slower support replies. Google Nest Learning Thermostat owners talk about a schedule that builds itself within days, wiring that the unit detects on its own, metal build quality and buying several units for other properties, while a few report the thermostat dropping off Wi-Fi and needing a fresh setup, or limited warranty support abroad.
