What the differences mean
Remote room sensor
The Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium includes a SmartSensor and can pick which reading to follow by presence, so the room people are in sets the temperature. The Honeywell Home T5 Smart Thermostat cannot use one and only measures the wall it is mounted on, which matters most in a two-storey or long house.
What it senses
The Ecobee measures humidity, CO2, TVOC, occupancy and proximity and can raise air quality alerts. The Honeywell reads temperature only. If you want a thermostat that also tells you when a room is stuffy, only the Ecobee does.
Screen and speaker
The Ecobee has a 4 inch color touchscreen showing weather and a built-in speaker for voice control on the device. The Honeywell has a larger 4.95 inch touchscreen, not color, and no speaker, so voice runs through your phone or another speaker.
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
The Ecobee joins 2.4 and 5 GHz networks and has Bluetooth. The Honeywell is 2.4 GHz only with no Bluetooth, which is fine near the router and less forgiving on a crowded network.
Warranty and system checks
The Ecobee carries a 3 year warranty against 2 years on the Honeywell. In return the Honeywell has a system health monitor and scheduling suggestions, which the Ecobee does not list.
Which one to buy if
- one bedroom is always hotter or colder than the hallway
The Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium comes with a remote sensor and can follow the room you are actually in.
- you want air quality readings and alerts from the thermostat
It measures CO2, TVOC and humidity and raises air quality alerts, which the Honeywell Home T5 Smart Thermostat cannot.
- it is a one-zone apartment and you only want a schedule and geofencing
The Honeywell Home T5 Smart Thermostat covers scheduling and Auto Home and Away at a noticeably lower price.
- you want a larger, high-contrast screen and a system health monitor
The Honeywell's 4.95 inch display and its system health monitor are things the Ecobee does not offer.

What owners say
Owners of both thermostats agree that the real payoff is remote control and a schedule that stops the house heating while nobody is home, and neither group reports Matter or a learning mode as a reason to buy. Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium owners single out the bundled SmartSensor evening out a hot upstairs and a cold hallway, the screen that wakes as you approach and voice control through Alexa or Siri on the device itself, while their complaints are wiring surprises in older homes that sometimes end with an electrician, occasional app glitches and slow support. Honeywell Home T5 Smart Thermostat owners talk about a swap that can take seconds when replacing an older Honeywell, a clean black face and good value, and they warn about the C wire requirement, units that would not work with their system and software that got worse after a promising install.
