Aqara Smart Wall Switch H1 EU (No Neutral, Double) Review: Two Smart Circuits in Old Wiring

The verdict

This is the two-rocker H1 for wall boxes that have no neutral wire, which is the situation in a large share of older European housing and the reason most smart switches cannot be installed there. It controls two circuits independently at up to 8 A each on 100-250 V, keeps the existing plate working by hand, and supports Google Home, Alexa, Apple HomeKit, Home Assistant and IFTTT through a Zigbee hub, with Matter available via an Aqara hub. Either rocker can be decoupled into wireless switch mode for scene control. The trade against the with-neutral version is energy monitoring, which is absent here.

Best for
  • Homes without a neutral wire
  • Two-circuit switch plates
  • Apple HomeKit users
  • Scene control from the wall

Pros

  • Installs without a neutral wire
  • Two independent circuits from one plate
  • Works with Google Home, Alexa, Apple HomeKit, Home Assistant and IFTTT
  • Matter available through an Aqara hub
  • Each rocker can be decoupled into wireless scene mode
  • Adjustable status LED and power-off memory
  • Keeps normal manual operation of both lights

Cons

  • No energy monitoring, unlike the with-neutral version
  • Only overheating protection, with no overvoltage, overcurrent or overpower cutoffs
  • Requires a Zigbee hub, and Matter needs an Aqara hub
  • No Samsung SmartThings support
  • 8 A per rocker, with the maximum wattage undocumented
  • EU faceplate format, so check plate standard and box depth

Who is the H1 no-neutral double for?

Anyone whose two-gang switch box has only live and switched live. That wiring is common in older properties and it blocks most smart switches outright, so a no-neutral option is not a compromise, it is the only route. Handling two circuits from one device also keeps things tidy where a hall light and an outside lamp share a plate. Because the physical rockers keep working normally, the household experience does not change, which is what makes smart lighting acceptable to everyone else in the house.

What it does well

Two independent circuits at 8 A each across 100-250 V. Wireless switch mode lets either rocker be decoupled from its relay, keeping the circuit powered while the button acts as a Zigbee scene controller, which is the right arrangement when the fixture holds smart bulbs. Power-off memory decides the state when mains returns, the status LED can be adjusted or turned off for a bedroom, and overheating protection is included. Platform coverage is unusually wide for an in-wall switch, with native Apple HomeKit alongside Google Home, Alexa, Home Assistant and IFTTT.

What to know before you buy

There is no energy monitoring on the no-neutral models, so if metering matters and your box does have a neutral, buy the with-neutral version instead. Protection is limited to overheating, with no overvoltage, overcurrent or overpower cutoffs. A Zigbee hub is required, and Matter depends on an Aqara hub rather than being native. SmartThings is unsupported. Only resistive loads are documented and the maximum in watts is not stated, only 8 A per rocker. It is an EU-format plate, and depth matters in an older two-gang box. Warranty is one year.

Is the H1 no-neutral double worth it?

It is inexpensive per controlled circuit and it works where most competitors simply cannot be fitted, which is the entire value proposition. Add native HomeKit support and scene decoupling, and it is one of the more capable no-neutral switches available. If your wiring does include a neutral, spend the same money on the with-neutral version and gain energy monitoring.

Frequently asked questions

Can it be installed without a neutral wire?

Yes. That is the point of this version, and it is what makes it usable in older European wall boxes that only have live and switched live.

Does it measure energy use?

No. Energy monitoring is only available on Aqara's with-neutral H1 switches.

Does it work with Apple HomeKit?

Yes, alongside Google Home, Alexa, Home Assistant and IFTTT, through a Zigbee hub. Matter requires an Aqara hub.

Can I use a rocker for scenes instead of switching a light?

Yes, through wireless switch mode, which decouples the rocker so the circuit stays powered while the button triggers scenes.

How much load can each rocker switch?

8 A on AC from 100 to 250 V, for resistive loads.

Why it needs a Zigbee coordinator

The Aqara Smart Wall Switch H1 EU (No Neutral) - Double speaks Zigbee, not Wi-Fi. On its own it cannot reach your phone, your voice assistant or any automation: it needs a Zigbee coordinator to join. These are the ones in our catalog that can run it.
