Leviton Decora Smart Wi-Fi Switch D315S Review: Matter Out of the Box in a Slim Decora Body

The verdict

The D315S is Leviton's Matter certified take on the plain in-wall light switch: it joins a 2.4 GHz network on its own with no hub, and the same switch can then be commissioned into Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home, SmartThings or Home Assistant over Matter. Its electrical range is the widest part of the spec sheet, 15A general use, 3A of LED or CFL and a 1/3 HP motor, so it can take a ceiling fan or an exhaust fan as readily as a light fixture. What it asks for is a neutral wire and a 2.4 GHz network, and multi-location control means adding a wired or wire-free companion. It is a mid-priced switch that spends its money on ecosystem freedom and load range rather than on extra features: there is no dimming and no energy monitoring.

Best for
  • Matter households
  • Hub-free setups
  • Ceiling and exhaust fans
  • Home Assistant users
  • Crowded wallboxes

Pros

  • Matter certified out of the box, so it commissions into Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home, SmartThings or Home Assistant
  • No hub required, it joins a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network on its own
  • Wide load range: 15A general use, 3A LED or CFL and 1/3 HP motor loads such as ceiling and exhaust fans
  • Slim 1.09 inch rear housing with wire leads, built for a crowded wallbox
  • Status LED finds the switch in the dark and can be set three ways or turned off
  • Schedules, scenes and auto-shutoff are stored on the device, so they survive an internet outage
  • Screwless wallplate included, and the faceplate colour can be changed with the DDKIT-S kit

Cons

  • Neutral wire required, which many older switch boxes do not have
  • 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only, with no 5 GHz band
  • On and off only, there is no dimming
  • No energy monitoring
  • Multi-location control needs a separate wired or wire-free companion
  • No documented over temperature, overvoltage, overcurrent or overpower protection
  • 1 year limited warranty, shorter than some competing smart switches

Who is the Leviton Decora Smart Wi-Fi Switch D315S for?

This is a wired replacement for an ordinary single pole light switch, for people who want the fixture itself to be smart instead of the bulbs in it. Because it talks 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi directly and is set up from the My Leviton app, there is no bridge or coordinator to buy first, and because it is Matter certified there is no lock-in either: the same switch can be added to Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home, SmartThings or Home Assistant, and Matter is multi-admin, so it can answer to more than one of them at once. The load rating widens the audience beyond lighting, since 15A general use and a 1/3 HP motor rating cover ceiling fans, exhaust fans, pumps and other motor loads that a dimmer would not be allowed to switch. The one prerequisite is wiring: the wallbox needs a neutral, and Leviton's answer for boxes without one is a different model, the DN15S, which works through the MLWSB bridge.

What the D315S offers

The headline is Matter straight out of the box, certified by the Connectivity Standards Alliance, with the setup code printed on the device and on the packaging and also retrievable in the My Leviton app. On the electrical side Leviton rates it for 120VAC at 15A general use, 3A of LED or CFL and 1/3 HP of motor load, and the rear housing is 1.09 inches deep with wire leads rather than screw terminals, which is what makes it fit behind a plate in a box already crowded with conductors. The status LED lights when the load is off so the switch is findable in a dark hallway, and it is configurable three ways from the app or from the switch's own setup mode: lit when the load is on, lit when the load is off, or off altogether. Automation lives in the My Leviton app, with sunrise and sunset schedules, room scenes, activities and an auto-shutoff timer for closets, bathrooms and garages, and those schedules are held in onboard memory, so they keep running while the internet is down and the switch returns to its last state after a power cut. A screwless wallplate is in the box, and the faceplate colour can be swapped later with the DDKIT-S kit in black, grey, brown, light almond, ivory or white.

What to know before you buy

The neutral wire is the first gate, and it rules out plenty of older switch boxes before anything else is considered. The radio is 2.4 GHz only, 802.11 b/g/n, so a router broadcasting a single merged band can make the initial pairing fiddly, and there is no 5 GHz fallback. This is an on and off switch, not a dimmer, so it belongs on non-dimmable fixtures or on circuits where dimming is handled elsewhere; Leviton's own D36HD covers the dimming case. There is no energy monitoring, so it reports nothing about consumption. Three way and multi-location control is supported but not self-contained: it needs a Leviton wired companion or a wire-free Anywhere Companion, bought separately. Leviton documents no over temperature, overvoltage, overcurrent or overpower cutoff, which leaves protection to the branch circuit breaker, and the warranty is 1 year limited, where some rivals go to 2. Finally, it is rated for indoor use only, and Leviton notes that a metal wallbox or a metal wallplate can degrade its radio performance.

Is the Leviton Decora Smart Wi-Fi Switch D315S worth it?

For a single pole circuit in a box with a neutral, this is a switch that ages well: Matter certification means it is not tied to whichever app is fashionable, and the load rating means it can end up on a fan or a pump rather than only on a light. It costs more than the cheapest Wi-Fi switches, and what the extra buys is the Matter path, the wider load range, the slim housing and the screwless wallplate in the box rather than a longer feature list. Pay less if the circuit is a plain lamp and one ecosystem is enough forever; pay more if the fixture needs dimming or if the wallbox has no neutral, because those are the two things this model genuinely does not do.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Leviton D315S need a hub?

No. It connects straight to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network and is set up in the My Leviton app, with no bridge or gateway to buy. A Matter controller is optional and only needed if you want to add the switch to Apple Home, SmartThings, Home Assistant or another Matter platform.

Does the D315S require a neutral wire?

Yes. A neutral in the wallbox is required. Leviton's no-neutral Wi-Fi switch is a different model, the DN15S, which reaches the network through the MLWSB bridge instead.

Does the D315S work with Matter, Apple Home and SmartThings?

Yes. It is Matter certified by the Connectivity Standards Alliance, so scanning its setup code adds it to any Matter controller, including Apple Home, SmartThings, Google Home, Alexa and Home Assistant. Matter is multi-admin, so it can be shared with several of them at the same time.

Can the Leviton D315S be used in a 3-way circuit?

Yes, with an accessory. Multi-location control works through a Leviton wired companion or a wire-free Anywhere Companion paired to the switch, which are sold separately.

Can the D315S dim lights?

No. It is an on and off switch rated for 15A general use, 3A LED or CFL and 1/3 HP motor loads. Leviton's Decora Smart Wi-Fi dimmer, the D36HD, is the model for dimmable fixtures.

What happens to the D315S after a power outage?

Its onboard memory keeps the configuration and the schedules, and the switch returns to the state it was in when power comes back. Schedules also keep running while the internet connection is down.
