Sonoff M5 Matter Wall Switch (EU, Single) Review: Native Matter on a Cheap Wi-Fi Switch

The verdict

The Sonoff M5 single is a Wi-Fi wall switch whose main argument is Matter: support is native, not routed through a bridge, so the switch joins Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or SmartThings directly, and no hub is required at all. It handles a healthy 10 A and 2200 W on 100-240 V, keeps power-off memory and an adjustable status LED, and works with Home Assistant and IFTTT as well. It needs a neutral wire, has no energy monitoring, and lists none of the four safety protections, which is the main thing to weigh against its price.

Best for
  • Matter-first smart homes
  • Hub-free setups
  • Apple HomeKit users
  • Budget smart lighting

Pros

  • Native Matter support, with no bridge or hub required
  • Works with Google Home, Alexa, Apple HomeKit, SmartThings, Home Assistant and IFTTT
  • Strong 10 A and 2200 W rating
  • Wide 100-240 V compatibility
  • Power-off memory
  • Status LED that can be adjusted or turned off
  • Low price

Cons

  • Requires a neutral wire
  • No overheating, overvoltage, overcurrent or overpower protection listed
  • No energy monitoring
  • 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only, and each switch takes a slot on your network
  • Wireless switch (decoupled scene) mode is not documented
  • 41.5 mm deep, so the back box must have room
  • One year warranty

Who is the Sonoff M5 single for?

Anyone who wants a smart switch that will not become obsolete when they change platform. Because Matter is native, the same switch can be commissioned into Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or SmartThings, and it also works with Home Assistant and IFTTT, so no purchase decision is locked to an ecosystem. Being Wi-Fi based there is no hub to buy, which suits a small installation of one or two switches. As a wall switch it keeps normal manual operation, so the household does not need to learn anything.

What it handles

A single rocker switching up to 2200 W at 10 A on 100-240 V AC, which is a generous rating for a wall switch and covers demanding lighting circuits comfortably. Power-off memory decides the state when mains power returns. The status LED is adjustable, so it can be dimmed or disabled in a bedroom, and automations run through whichever platform you connect. The EU faceplate measures 86 x 86 mm with a 41.5 mm depth.

What to know before you buy

A neutral wire is required, which rules out many older European wall boxes; Aqara's no-neutral switches are the alternative there. None of the four safety protections (overheating, overvoltage, overcurrent, overpower) are listed for this model, which is a genuine gap compared with switches that document them. There is no energy monitoring. Wi-Fi is 2.4 GHz only, and every Wi-Fi switch consumes a slot on your router, which matters if you plan to fit a whole house (a Zigbee system scales better there). Wireless switch mode, the decoupling feature that turns a rocker into a scene button, is not documented for this model. Depth is 41.5 mm, so check the back box. Warranty is one year.

Is the Sonoff M5 single worth it?

For the money, native Matter plus a 10 A rating is a strong combination, and the absence of a hub requirement makes it the easiest way to add one or two smart switches to any ecosystem. The compromises are the undocumented protections and the missing energy metering. If you are fitting a handful of switches and want them to work with whatever platform you use now and later, it is an easy recommendation.
