Sonoff M5 Matter Wall Switch (EU, Triple) Review: Three Circuits, But Only 2 A Each

Native Matter and three rockers in one plate, with a load rating low enough that it suits LED lighting only.

The verdict

The triple M5 fits three independently switched rockers into one EU faceplate and supports Matter natively over Wi-Fi, so it joins Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or SmartThings without a hub, and works with Home Assistant and IFTTT too. The number to pay attention to before buying is the load rating: 2 A and 440 W per rocker, considerably lower than the single and double versions. That is fine for modern LED lighting and nothing else. It requires a neutral wire, has no energy monitoring, and lists none of the four safety protections.

Best for
  • Three-gang LED lighting plates
  • Matter-first smart homes
  • Hub-free setups
  • Budget smart lighting

Pros

  • Three independent circuits from one plate
  • Native Matter support, with no hub required
  • Works with Google Home, Alexa, Apple HomeKit, SmartThings, Home Assistant and IFTTT
  • Wide 100-240 V compatibility
  • Power-off memory
  • Status LED that can be adjusted or turned off
  • Cheap per controlled circuit

Cons

  • Only 2 A and 440 W per rocker, so LED lighting only
  • Requires a neutral wire
  • No overheating, overvoltage, overcurrent or overpower protection listed
  • No energy monitoring
  • 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only
  • Wireless switch (decoupled scene) mode is not documented
  • 41.5 mm deep, which is tight for an older three-gang box

Who is the M5 triple for?

It targets the three-gang plate that controls several lighting circuits in a hall or living room, replacing all three switches at once. Native Matter is what separates it from cheaper triples: the switch can be commissioned directly into Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or SmartThings, plus Home Assistant and IFTTT, and no hub or bridge is involved. Manual operation of each light continues as normal, which keeps everyone in the house happy.

What it handles

Three rockers, each switching up to 440 W at 2 A on 100-240 V AC. For LED fixtures, which typically draw a few watts each, that is ample: a room's worth of LED downlights sits comfortably inside 440 W. Power-off memory covers behaviour after an outage, the status LED can be dimmed or disabled, and automations work through whichever platform you connect. The EU faceplate is 86 x 86 mm and 41.5 mm deep.

What to know before you buy

The 2 A per rocker limit is the defining constraint of this model, roughly a fifth of the single-rocker version, so it should not be used for halogen or incandescent fittings, heaters or anything motorised. Add up the wattage of each circuit before ordering. A neutral wire is required. None of the four safety protections (overheating, overvoltage, overcurrent, overpower) are listed. There is no energy monitoring, Wi-Fi is 2.4 GHz only, and wireless switch mode for decoupled scene control is not documented. Depth is 41.5 mm, which is a real consideration in an older three-gang box where wiring is already tight. Warranty is one year.

Is the M5 triple worth it?

Three Matter-native circuits at this price is good value, provided your loads are LED. Check the maths first: if any of the three circuits carries a heavier fitting, this is the wrong switch and a higher rated model or an in-wall relay is the safer choice. For a modern LED lighting setup with a neutral wire available, it is a cheap way to make a whole plate smart without committing to any one ecosystem.

Frequently asked questions

How much load can each rocker handle?

Up to 440 W at 2 A per rocker, on AC from 100 to 240 V. That suits LED lighting, but not halogen, incandescent or motorised loads.

Why is the rating lower than the single-rocker M5?

Fitting three switching circuits into one faceplate leaves less capacity per circuit. The single version is rated 10 A and 2200 W, the double 5 A and 1100 W, and this triple 2 A and 440 W.

Does it need a hub?

No. Matter is supported natively over Wi-Fi, so it connects directly to Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or SmartThings.

Is a neutral wire required?

Yes.

Does it measure energy use?

No. Energy monitoring is not supported on this model.
