Aeotec Water Sensor 7 Pro vs Ring Flood & Freeze Sensor (2nd Gen)

Full Smart Water Leak Sensors comparison in 2026

Updated October 2026
Data from Amazon and official Aeotec and Ring sites.
2026 verdict
On Amazon Sidewalk, the Ring Flood & Freeze Sensor (2nd Gen) is the water leak sensor that fits a Ring house.
It publishes IP66 and about six years on two AA cells, where the Aeotec Water Sensor 7 Pro is IP20 and about three years on an ER14250. The Aeotec still wins the hub job: Z-Wave into SmartThings and Home Assistant, a probe cable, temperature alerts and automations. The Ring sensor lists Home Assistant, freeze alerts and no automations, and it has no siren. Pick the Ring Flood & Freeze Sensor (2nd Gen) for Sidewalk and a damp basement. Pick the Aeotec Water Sensor 7 Pro when the controller is already Z-Wave.

What the differences mean

Radio

The Aeotec Water Sensor 7 Pro is Z-Wave and needs a Z-Wave hub. The Ring Flood & Freeze Sensor (2nd Gen) uses Amazon Sidewalk, not Wi-Fi, Zigbee or Z-Wave. Sidewalk is why owners still got a flood note when the property Wi-Fi was down. A Z-Wave controller does nothing for the Ring sensor.

Probe versus puck

The Aeotec Water Sensor 7 Pro includes a sensor cable, so the probe can sit in a pan the body cannot reach. The Ring Flood & Freeze Sensor (2nd Gen) has no sensor cable. Water has to reach the sensor body itself.

Freeze and temperature

Both list freeze-temperature alerts. The Aeotec Water Sensor 7 Pro also lists a temperature sensor and temperature alerts. The Ring Flood & Freeze Sensor (2nd Gen) lists low-temperature sensing and freeze alerts, and it does not list general temperature alerts.

Housing and battery

The Ring Flood & Freeze Sensor (2nd Gen) is IP66 and quotes about six years on two AA cells. The Aeotec Water Sensor 7 Pro is IP20, so it is not a wet-location housing, and it quotes about three years on an ER14250. Neither has an on-device sound or light. Low-battery alerts are not documented on either sheet.

Automations

The Aeotec Water Sensor 7 Pro lists automations, SmartThings and Home Assistant. The Ring Flood & Freeze Sensor (2nd Gen) lists Home Assistant and does not list automations, and Google Home, Apple Home, SmartThings and Matter are unsupported. Alexa is also unsupported on the Ring sheet, so the fit is the Ring app and Sidewalk, not a native Alexa flag.

What owners say

Owners of the Aeotec Water Sensor 7 Pro and the Ring Flood & Freeze Sensor (2nd Gen) both want an early warning near a water heater or a sump, and both accept that the puck itself makes no sound. Aeotec Water Sensor 7 Pro owners single out sensitivity once the sensor is paired, the probe cable in tight spots, and temperature plus freeze alerts, and they complain about a fiddly Z-Wave pair on some hubs and about probe corrosion when a unit sits wet for months. Ring Flood & Freeze Sensor (2nd Gen) owners single out setup in the Ring app and Sidewalk reports that still arrived when home Wi-Fi was down, and they complain that this generation does not shut a valve and that a sensor which drops offline has no local reset.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is better overall: Aeotec Water Sensor 7 Pro or Ring Flood & Freeze Sensor (2nd Gen)?

The Ring Flood & Freeze Sensor (2nd Gen) for a Ring household: IP66, about six years on AA cells, freeze alerts and Amazon Sidewalk. The Aeotec Water Sensor 7 Pro is the better fit on an existing Z-Wave hub, with a probe cable, temperature alerts, SmartThings, Home Assistant and automations.

Is the Aeotec Water Sensor 7 Pro a Ring compatible water sensor?

No. The Aeotec Water Sensor 7 Pro is Z-Wave and lists no Ring path. The Ring compatible sensor in this pair is the Ring Flood & Freeze Sensor (2nd Gen), which uses Amazon Sidewalk and the Ring app.

Does the Ring Flood & Freeze Sensor (2nd Gen) work with Alexa?

The spec sheet marks Alexa unsupported on the Ring Flood & Freeze Sensor (2nd Gen). What it does list is Amazon Sidewalk and Home Assistant. The Aeotec Water Sensor 7 Pro is also without Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home and Matter. It lists SmartThings and Home Assistant over Z-Wave.

Which one can shut off the water?

Neither sensor is a valve. The Aeotec Water Sensor 7 Pro lists automations, so a Z-Wave hub can use it to drive something else. The Ring Flood & Freeze Sensor (2nd Gen) lists no automations, and owners note this generation does not integrate a shutoff the way the older Ring sensor did.

Who should buy the Aeotec Water Sensor 7 Pro?

Z-Wave households that want a probe cable, temperature and freeze alerts, and automations in SmartThings or Home Assistant, and that can keep an IP20 body out of standing water.

Who should buy the Ring Flood & Freeze Sensor (2nd Gen)?

People already in the Ring app who want a simple leak and freeze warning over Amazon Sidewalk, IP66 housing and a long AA battery, and who do not need a probe cable or a local siren.
