A smart window covering is a curtain, blind or shade with a motor and a radio in it, so the fabric moves on a schedule, on a voice command or as part of an automation instead of by hand. It is one of the few smart home products people notice every day, because waking up to daylight instead of an alarm is exactly the difference it makes. It also does real work on the energy side, since a window is the weakest part of any wall, which is why this category sits close to Thermostats and Temperature & Humidity Sensors rather than next to the lighting shelf.
The market is split in two. On one side are retrofit motors that clip onto the covering already hanging in your window; on the other are complete coverings built around a motorised tube and ordered to the exact size of the opening. Almost every other decision in this guide follows from which of the two you are buying.
A Retrofit Kit motorises what you already own. A curtain driver clips onto the rail, grips the rod and walks along it dragging the fabric; a tilt motor replaces the wand of a venetian blind; a roller motor takes over the bead chain. Nothing is measured, drilled or thrown away, so a window costs well under a hundred dollars to automate and the job takes about ten minutes. The trade-off is that the kit inherits the hardware it is bolted to: a kinked rail, a rod that was never level or a stiff chain all turn into stalling and a battery that dies in weeks. Retrofit motors are also louder, because the motor sits out in the room instead of inside a tube.
A purpose-built covering hides the motor in the head rail, runs quieter, moves smoother and looks like a normal blind because it is one. Noise Level is the specification buyers most often regret ignoring. The job a smart shade is bought for is opening at sunrise, and it does that job next to a sleeping person. Quiet modes on the better motors reach the mid twenties in decibels, ordinary motors run in the thirties, and anything past 45 dB is clearly audible through a closed door. For a bedroom, treat this column as a hard filter rather than a tiebreaker.
Most smart coverings run on a rechargeable lithium battery charged over USB-C, and the honest figure is between three months and a year depending on how often the covering moves and how much friction it fights. Position Control by percentage lets an automation park a shade at 40% to kill screen glare without darkening the room, and Manual Operation is the safety net: a tug on the fabric moves the covering when the battery is flat, the network is down or a guest does not have the app. Pair that with Motion Sensors or presence rules and the coverings stop being a gadget and become something nobody thinks about.
Locally, yes. Nearly all of them keep a Bluetooth radio for setup and short range control, and the on-board schedule keeps running with the internet down. What you lose without a bridge or a border router is remote control from outside the house and the voice assistants, since Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home reach the covering through that hub and not through Bluetooth.

Group control is worth confirming before ordering, because without it the two halves start on separate commands and drift visibly out of alignment.
