Graywind Smart Vertical Blinds Review: Made to Measure Cover for a Patio Door

The verdict

This is the covering for the widest opening in the house. Graywind builds the track to the exact size of the window, from 59 to 157 inches wide and up to 124 inches high, which is the span a patio door or a run of sliding glass needs and that stock shades do not reach. The vanes rotate 180 degrees for light and privacy and the whole blind traverses out of the way, both from the app, the bundled remote or a voice command. The catch is the power: this is a hardwired plug-in motor, so the window has to have an outlet near it, and the smart home side stops at Alexa and Google Home.

Best for
  • Patio and sliding glass doors
  • Wide openings
  • Alexa and Google Home households
  • Made to measure blackout
  • Windows with an outlet nearby

Pros

  • Made to measure from 59 to 157 inches wide and up to 124 inches high, covering patio and sliding glass doors
  • Vanes rotate 180 degrees, so light and privacy are set without moving the blind across
  • Hardwired Wi-Fi motor reaches Alexa and Google Home directly, with no bridge or hub to buy
  • Fourteen fabrics on one track, from 100% blackout with UV protection to textured and luminous light filtering
  • Six channel remote in the box, pre-paired, driving up to five blinds together or one at a time
  • Five year warranty, and the blind still moves by hand during a power cut

Cons

  • Mains powered only: no battery or solar option, so the window needs an outlet within reach
  • No Apple Home, no SmartThings and no Matter on this motor
  • No light sensor in the blind, so brightness based rules need a separate sensor
  • Graywind does not publish a motor noise figure, which matters on a bedroom window
  • Made to measure orders cannot be returned if the measurements are wrong

Who are the Graywind Smart Vertical Blinds for?

They are for the sliding glass door, the patio door and the wide picture window, the openings a roller shade either cannot span or looks wrong on. Because the blind is made to order, the track arrives cut to the window rather than to the nearest standard size, and the vane stack can be set to gather on the left, on the right or split to the centre so it clears the door you actually walk through. The second requirement is an outlet: the motor is mains powered, which suits a living room or an office wall more than a bedroom window with nothing behind it.

What the Graywind Smart Vertical Blinds offer

The 3.5 inch fabric vanes rotate through 180 degrees, so the blind has two independent controls rather than one: how far across the opening it is drawn, and how far the vanes are turned. Both are set from the Graywind app, from the six channel remote or by voice. Fourteen fabrics are offered on the same track, from a blackout series that blocks all of the light and adds UV protection to textured and luminous light filtering weaves, and the fabric also does some thermal work on a wall that is mostly glass. The motor is hardwired and joins Wi-Fi on its own, so there is no bridge or hub in the bill, and the blind still moves by hand during a power cut.

What to know before you buy

Mains power is the first constraint: there is no battery version of this motor and no solar option, so a window with no outlet within reach means running a cord. The smart home side is the second. Alexa and Google Home are supported through the Graywind app, but Apple Home and SmartThings are not, and neither is Matter: Graywind keeps those on its separate motor range, so a house built around a Matter fabric or an Apple Home hub should look at that line instead. There is no light sensor in the blind either, so any brightness based rule needs a sensor elsewhere in the room. And as with every made to measure covering, the order is cut for one opening and cannot be returned if the measurements are wrong, which makes the measuring guide worth reading twice.

Are the Graywind Smart Vertical Blinds worth it?

Motorised vertical blinds are a thin market, and most of what is sold at this size is a local made to measure job quoted per window. Getting a track cut to 157 inches with a Wi-Fi motor, a pre-paired remote and a five year warranty on the motor and the parts is a strong package for the room it suits. It is worth it when the opening is wide, an outlet is close and the house runs on Alexa or Google Home. It is the wrong buy for a battery-only window or a Matter and Apple Home setup.

Frequently asked questions

Do the Graywind Smart Vertical Blinds need a hub?

No. The hardwired Wi-Fi motor joins the home network by itself and reaches the Graywind app, Alexa and Google Home with no bridge, hub or gateway to buy. The bundled remote also drives the blind with no network at all.

How wide a window can they cover?

Graywind builds the track from 59 to 157 inches wide and 61 to 124 inches high, cut to the size given with the order, which covers patio doors and runs of sliding glass that stock coverings cannot span.

Do they work with Apple Home, SmartThings or Matter?

No. This is the hardwired Wi-Fi motor, and Graywind lists Apple Home, SmartThings and Matter over Thread on its other motor options instead. Voice control here is Alexa and Google Home through the Graywind app.

How are they powered?

By a hardwired plug-in motor that stays on mains power, so there is no battery to recharge and no solar panel to add. The vanes can still be moved by hand if the power goes out.

Can the vanes be tilted separately from opening the blind?

Yes. Position and tilt are two separate controls: the 3.5 inch vanes rotate through 180 degrees for glare and privacy while the blind stays drawn, and the whole stack traverses sideways when the opening needs to be clear.
